discarding cards at the shuffle?

new to this forum, wanted to say hi first.

I'm new to card counting. I just started learning it about 3 weeks ago. I chose to learn the knock out system for now.

There's this poker room at the next city where I live and I went there just to see what it's like to count in a live game. I didn't gamble a lot since I've just started learning card counting.

At the poker room I went to the dealer discards around 5-10 cards before he/she begins dealing the new shoe after shuffling, only showing us 1 of the cards. Also they switch dealers mid shoe and discard another 2 cards and they don't let us see them either. It looks like they only play 75% of the shoe because they always put a yellow card about 25% in the shoe at the end.

Is this bad for me? Is it worth trying to count cards at this poker room considering those cards they put aside?

Would I be better off going on a hour drive to the nearest casino instead? I'm not sure how their rules are about shuffling at my nearest casino though.

are you sure you're in the poker room? that sounds like what a baccarat dealer does at the start of a shoe. if the first card is an 8, they burn 8 cards, if its a 2 they burn 2, etc.

I have seen a blackjack game where they do exactly that.

If it's a card room and not a casino then they probably charge a collection on each hand, which is terrible. Also, the card rooms here in California all deal a bastardized version of blackjack which requires a different basic strategy. Make sure the game that your local card room offers is a legit BJ game and not something like "No Bust BJ" or "Extreme 21" or some other gimmick. If you're just starting out then you might want to avoid card rooms and stick to casinos at first.

That kind of sounds like what they do there. I've seen them burn a different amount of cards each time. One time I seen them flip over an ace and burn a ridiculous amount.

ya, it's a card room here in California, in turlock. It's a small room next to a movie theater. The dealers hit on soft 17 and they have a dealer bust side bet which will pay you out depending how many cards they used when they busted.

The casino I've been to before, but never really tried counting, is an Indian casino. Black oak is the name of the casino over here in northern California. They have lucky ladies side bets where if your first 2 cards equal 20 they'll pay you out extra. Which is why I want to try counting cards there so I'll know when most of the high cards are left and hopefully get some lucky ladies.
