The "$20 trick"

Who has done this?
I usually am alone and never in the room other than sleep, plus stay in nicer hotels so never tried-BUT-going for 2weeks mid Jan and have a few visitors stopping by so a bigger room would be nice. If it's free/cheap.
All stay is at 4 star or better hotels. I assume it would work at dumps like the Sahara or Excalibur but better hotels?
Is is it now the "$50 trick" due to inflation?

I think that's more of a thing of the past. most casinos now are more professional that I have been to

In January, I attempted to check into the Rio very early- I think I got there around 10AM on a Monday. The clerk told me nothing was available but I should leave my bags at the coat check and come back after 1Pm. He said he'd have everything ready for me then and I would have a nice mountain view. I thanked him and gave him $10. As I was walking away, he called me back and told me to hold on a minute. I got a room right away and it turned out to be one of the real suites. - Kitchen, dining room living room, two bathrooms and a jacuzzi.
Thats not the first upgrade I've gotten, nor will it be the last.

Whats the best way to go about this? Slip the $20 in your passport and ask the clerk for a upgrade when he opens it? Or just give it to him and hope for the best?

For highline joints I would use the $100 trick. zg

This obviously works better midweek when the hotel is at less than optimal capacity.

That term, "highline joints" kind of grates on my ears. Anyway, I rarely pay more than $100 for a meal, so I am assuming I have never graced a highline joint.
