Default Las Vegas Trip Report: Nearly bankrupted the Tropicana!

I signed up for a Tropicana card and got an MP coupon plus a 2:1 BJ coupon. I lost $5 on the MP and then stupidly only put $5 on the 2:1 BJ coupon (I should have pushed $100 in there, the coupon max).

Oh, well. +$5 on blackjack for the trip with only $10 wagered. That's an EV of +50%, boys and girls.

Playing $100 a hand in the hopes of cashing in a 2-1 BJ coupon is a very good way to ruin a vacation if you are generally a red chip player. it's okay to up your bet on a MP but the 2-1 BJ can be dangerous.

Say you are a red chip player spreading $5-$50, since the coupon is good for up to a $100 bet, just use the coupon if you get a blackjack with a big bet out there. The only time to use it on a $5 bet is you know you have to leave and not return.

I have used that coupon and always wait till I have at least $100 bet.

I could have stomached a $100 loss. I have no problems taking losses when I have convinced myself that I am playing at a long-term advantage - I was down $580 at 4/8 Limit Hold'Em at one point on the trip and shrugged it off knowing that I'd make it back in the long run.

Wait, you can play the coupon after you get a blackjack?

I thought you had to play it up front and lost it if you didn't get a blackjack!

Unless things have changed extremely recently, I have always kept the coupon next to my chips and when I got a blackjack with at least $100 bet I put it next to the circle before being paid. Never a problem.
Otherwise it becomes really a virtually worthless coupon unless they give you them by the dozens.

Very few people use the coupons so it is also possible that the dealers think of them like match play coupons. When the dealer does not know what to do or you do not like what the dealer did, the pit should be called.

I just tossed $10 down the drain, then. I would have been willing to sit down and play $25 blackjack until I got a blackjack.

Given the value of the other coupons, that wouldn't be unexpected.
