The Eagles song. One interpretation is that he checked into the wrong kind of hotel (back in the 60's and 70's the acts were still illegal and hidden in underground establishments
) and saw some really extreme stuff. When the song was written you couldn't say those things openly in lyrics if you wanted to get airplay so it was heavily encoded.
Had a related experience myself once, checked into a motel that had been taken over by whores and they were ringing my phone all night, not believing anyone would be there just to sleep. ("Call you up in the middle of the night, just to hear them say...")
