"The only thing you really need to know is when to ask for a card, 'hit me' and when not to, 'I'll stand'."

Wow, they make it sound so simple!

Student: "What about card counting?"
Teacher: "It can't be done."

Student: "What about advanced plays?"
Teacher: "Sure. Always take even money. That's all you need to know."

Student: "But what about splitting and doubling?"
Teacher: "That's not important, now get out there and start betting money!"

Default Purpose of casino lessons

Many casinos still give lessons to players. This is especially true for craps which will seem confusing to those who have never played it before.
There is only one reason for these lessons and we really should not expect anything more. They are designed to get the new player comfortable enough to go to the game and play. The casino is not going to teach this person how to win, they are not even going to give him much more than the most basic of play strategy at most. Just show him how easy it is to sit down, hit, split, double or stay and watch your money go down that slot in the table.

Anyone who could expect the casinos to either teach a proper basic strategy or even a winning strategy would be in a dream world. Just the fact that many casinos do sell correct basic strategy cards for several games is something, and one of the very few things, that I actually can congratulate casinos on doing.

I took one of those BJ classes at the Imperial Palace once. They said that everybody would get a graduation certificate at the end, which I though would be funny to hang on my wall. After about 10 minutes of learning the hand signals for hitting and standing the class was over. I never did get my damn certificate either. I guess I should have known better.

The reason you didn't get your credentials was because you were learning hand-signaling for the pitch games.
BTW, Didn't they teach you hole carding techniques while you were there?
