Does anyone know if using your chips to keep information on the composition of the shoe is legal? For example if you used your chips to side count aces or something like that, could that possibly be illegal since you are using " a mechanical device" to aid you?

when i first started learning how to count cards about 12 years old... the first method i read was to use a chip, pick a point to be the "hand" and turn it clockwise or counter clockwise according to the count. When it got past every quarter turn you would raise your bet.
Effective no
obvious yes

I do not think it would be illegal but i dont think you would get away with it for to long.
The method i learnd to first count aces was to use my feet.

1 ace right toe down heel up
2nd right outstep down instep up
3rd heel down toe up
4th insted down out up

then you would switch feet up to 8 times through all the decks
it was an extremely simple way to count aces and not obvious whatso ever
it was very effective

It could be a gray area. but the fact that the chips are native and necessary to the table would help you.
More importantly, using chips to track the count could be fairly obvious, so a swift backing off may be coming.

You are so correct. Any object that is "usual table wear" is technically legal, i.e chips, drink coasters, straws even matches, lighters, cocktail glasses, beer bottles, ashtrays are considered legal and not "devices", hence they cannot prosecute , but they can still give you the "ol boot if they suspect you for counting.( I heard this from a friend, but not actually have had this happen to me personally.):grin:

MY methodology

I find that my method suits me just fine for DD games.

I simply append a LETTER to the running count that represents Aces.
"A" is one Ace seen. "B" is the second one, etc.
As there are 8 Aces my system utilizes the letters A through H inclusive.

I've never actually attempted any side counts myself but what about using some sort of visualization technique. You focus on something on the table or in casino everytime you see an ace . Those focal points could represent different numbers in the count. It would be hard for the casino to catch on to your side count method since your not physical moving anything but your eyes.

I feel like this method of sidecounting would be difficult since your eyes are sonstantly moving. I think flash had a good idea with the letter method since it cant get confused with the count. If you want to remove most memorization from your side count i still stand by the foot method.
