The single dumbest play I have ever seen

#1
I've been an AP for 22 years and while the actions of other players don't normally affect me, I have to share the dumbest play I've ever seen. I was in Vegas pouncing on the Flamingo's fantastic single deck games and there was this crazy 20-something guy sitting at third base. I stood on 20 and was prepared to win the hand when this guy, I don't know whether he was drunk, high, or had just been administered a full frontal lobotomy... but this joker decides to hit on 18. I repeat, HE HIT ON 18. What did he think he was trying to accomplish? He wound up getting a face card and had to stand, and this is the worst part... the dealer flipped up a 7 in the hole under her 9 then caught a 5 to make a miracle 21! Not only did his idiotic play cause everyone at the table to lose, it sent the FoC index which had previously been terrific plummeting into the ground. I badly wanted to curse him out but I knew that I would accidentally mention the index which would've gotten me 86'ed. To bring the index back up to respectability, I stood on 7 against the dealer's 5 a couple of hands later to avoid taking her bust card, which naturally worked. Still, I was so flummoxed by this idiot's play that I was distracted for the rest of the night and wound up dropping $2700. Oh well, when you're an AP you learn to live with those kind of fluctuations.

You have been an ap for 22 years and you stood on a 7 against a dealer five to avoid taking a dealer bust card which you just assumed was the next card? It also suprised you that he hit a 18? after 22 years of ap idk if it would drive me so crazy. I see idiots hit 17, 18, 19 all the time. You should also know that it wasent a miracle 5... it happens all the time as you should also know. Also he hit an 18, got a face card and didnt bust meaning it was a soft 18? Thats not to big a deal either....

If this guy you're talking about was playing BS in a SD game and hit a soft 18 with the dealer showing a 9, then actually it is the correct play.

Dumbest play I have seen yet. A player had 11 vs. 6 and stood because he was in third base and didnt want to take the bust card. We all won, and everyone just laughed.

If you ever stand on a hard seven, you're not an AP.

On my recent trip to Macau, I was playing at the Plaza at the Four Seasons (which uses the same rules as The Venetian, 0.16% house edge under perfect BS). The Plaza and Venetian offer Casino Surrender (i.e. if you have BJ and the dealer has a ten or ace showing, they give you the option of taking an even money win if you don't want to risk a dealer push).

Now, a 6-deck CSM game, if the dealer has an ace showing, the chance of them getting a ten is a bit less than a third. If the dealer has a ten, the chance is roughly one in thirteen (assuming all aces are still in the CSM). In either situation you should never ever ever ever ever ever ever EVER take Casino Surrender! Taking even money is a total bloody ripoff.

And someone with a bankroll that made my relatively modest stack of chips look puny took it.

I see plays like that and want to spew.

I am, but I'm a different breed of AP than most of the posters here. I don't buy into that "card counting" and "shuffle tracking" and "hole carding" mularkey. I however excel at calculating the flow of card index. This guy's insane hit on A7 caused it to go from +267 to -389, so I had to on hard 7 as a "short term tactical disadvantage play" to get the gaming gods back on my side. Besides, I knew I was a big favorite to win anyway because I know that the dealer busts 61.54% of the time when showing 5 based on the results of my 13 hand computer simulation (in fact, that's probably a conservative estimate, seeing as how I used the absolute unluckiest number of trials.) I didn't do so well last time dropping that $2700, but I'll be back in Vegas in no time to crush those single deck games on the Strip. They don't call it the "party pit" at the Flamingo for nothing!

Look's like someone has a promising career in standup - somewhere (George Bush's PR office for example?)

Now, did you hear the one about the cardcounter and the nun . . . . . ?

I just got even more confused. You're tracking the flow of the cards in a single deck game?

And why was it bad for the 3rd base player to hit if he was just playing basic strategy?

And how does the dealer bust over 60% of the time with a 5 showing?

Hey Zg, Want to join me at the Flamingo and team up against that fantastic single deck game? I promise not to get flummoxed when you hit your soft 18 and take the dealer's bust card. Why hell, I wont even care if you send that FoCking index plummeting! Sounds like a jolly good time, 'ol chap.

Thanks. Actually, I'm 26 and up until now been a BS player but I've decided to "take the plunge" into card counting now that I actually have money to set aside for a bankroll. My first post was actually a semi-true story except that I was of course the "moron who hit A7 against a 9" and the "AP" was a ploppy extraordinare who mumbled that I was an idiot then stormed off the table after that hand (to his "credit" I made up the standing on 7) and it was a shoe game at Foxwoods. I look forward to getting insight from this forum.

From the first post, I had a feeling this guy was FOS. Now I'm sure of it.
