what to do

#1
I was playing in Wynn Macau (good rules and no peek) one on one with the dealer, she drew me a 4 and then drew herself a 5, then she drew a 7 to me - GOOD, 4+7 Vs 5!!! but instead of asking me whether I should STAND, HIT, DOUBLE, SURRENDER, she immediately drew herself a 5, realizing she made a mistake, she turned the card face down. Dealer asked her supervisor behind to come to the table, I demanded that this 5 should be void but he insisted that this is the next card and I have the benefit of knowing, I still can STAND, HIT, DOUBLE or SURRENDER, knowing next card is a 5, I HIT and got to 16 and STAND. Dealer gets a 3 and another 10 for 18. LOSS. My question here is 1) What is my right under this situation? Can I demand to void this 5? 2) Should I surrender kowing that I will end up with 16? Should I have not seen this 5, I would have already DOUBLE and loss twice of the amount.

Usually in a big casino like Wynn I would expect there to be standard house procedure for a card exposed by dealer error.

In some places I have played an exposed card is automatically burned, in some places it is played even though you have seen it. You could simply ask if it is standard procedure for an exposed card to be played or to be burned.

Just reread and saw the first question -
If you have to play with the 5, you have a stiff in any case and need to look at dealer bust probabilities.

1. Stand - letting the dealer have the 5 for a total of 10 and a ~ 23% chance of winning (dealer bust probability)
2. Hit - take the 5 leaving the dealer with a 5 and a ~ 42% chance of winning.
3. Double - same as (2) your chances of winning are under 50%, so you should not double
4. Surrender - if you hit (2), your chances of winning are more than 25% so you should not surrender.
So the right answer is.... Hit.
Then smile at the dealer (who just saved you form a double) and ask her to always wait for you. and to only give you 10s on a double.

Also make sure you remember all your dealer bust %ages at the table :)

That's my take on it...

When a card is exposed like that, that is how most casinos I've played in also have handled the situation it really is an advantage to the player knowing what the next card is. If instead a ten was exposed how would you have felt if the casino burned the card then? The casino made the correct decision. Unfortunately having this advantageous info just didn't work out for you

Once they told you that the dealer was keeping the card you were now faced with 11 v 10. The fact that the dealer has a 5 up and 5 down is no different than if you only saw the dealer with a 10 up, so you are supposed to double with 11 v 10. Then you catch a 6 and basic strategy is to hit 16 v 10.

Maybe I’m missing something here, but I think he did the right thing. With 11 vs. 5 and the next card being a 5 the chart on p. 261 says to hit (with a negative expectation). If you double then you know you are stuck with 16 vs. 5, which is not the same as doubling against the dealer's 5 up and 5 in the hole.

But if he doubled then he can’t hit again. And if he hit then the dealer doesn’t have 10 anymore because he took the 5 from the dealer’s hand. Wouldn’t he stand on 16 vs. 5 when he doesn’t have any information?

Wait, sorry. I forgot this is no hole card game and I thought the 5 was the dealer's hole card. So yes he played it correctly.

As for arguing that the card should be burned I would certainly try and in many places in the US they would burn the card, but ultimately they can do whatever they want.

If my chance of winning by HIT is only 42%, why not SURRENDER when I only loss 50% of my bet?
