The town that faces being wiped off the map:
Flood waters engulf every single home in Mississippi community

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER
Last updated at 4:56 PM on 13th May 2011

With the Mississippi River 10ft out of its banks and heading towards a crest (peak) of 48ft on the Memphis gauge, county planners and emergency management officials fear that flood waters will enter nearly all the now-abandoned homes on the unprotected side of the levee.

On the bloated Mississippi River, the town of Tunica Cutoff, sits an hour's drive south of Memphis - recent flood waters have done significant damage to the town's housing and has left residents wondering if they'll have a community to return to when the water recedes.

CBS News reports that there are about 300 homes in the small town, and they have all been flooded.

If you look very closely you can see that the casino barges THEMSELVES are floating high & dry. And it looks like Sam's Town at least had the foresight to bring in enough fill dirt to build most of its buildings on higher ground.

I'm guessing that the casinos will probably reopen rather quickly, but it may be difficult to get ROOMS for quite a while.

I hope that in maybe 3 months all will return to normal; though if they have to rebuild, and that is doubtful, it will take much longer.

I imagine that the tobacco-chewing building inspectors in "Ole Miss" are easy to bribe. About $20 should suffice. … :p

I suspect that the casino found that "flood insurance" in Mississippi was unaffordable, even for their deep pockets.

Around these parts you are required to buy flood insurance to get a loan. Thats my understanding. The flood insurance doesnt cover tidal flooding. The people in the tidal areas have to buy it but any rain event that brings flooding also bring tidal flooding so the can never collect on a claim. What a racket.

Here's one that didn't float in time >>

AP: Destroyed: All that's visible are the towers from a casino after flood waters from the Mississippi washed into the town

Those aren't towers on top of a casino. That is a gateway TO a casino. See the street sign in lower right corner?

That's the DRIVEWAY to the Fitz - 1/2 a mile from the hotel-casino itself. The hotel and the casino boat slip are both built on a man-made bluff, at about a 10-12 ft higher elevation than the driveway/parking lot. If the water didn't get much deeper from the time they took this picture, I would say that the hotel lobby probably didn't even get wet.

Tunica reopening

The Horseshoe and Roadhouse casino's will reopen Friday the 19th at 4pm. Maybe also the Gold Strike though I haven't heard on it. The others are about a week behind.

If they float they should stay open for boaters. zg
