Uk Dealers

What the hell is going on with the dealers in the UK? Where do they get these people? Rude, ignorant and strangely have some sort of authority complex! They dont seem to get how it works, players bring the dealers wages to the casino and deposit them on the cloth yet the dealers treat the players like scum. I'm not talking about all dealers of course but it does seem theres a lack of training being given to these people.

I have seen a dealer tell a player not to split those 8's against the dealers 6 and the dealer actually believed this was good advice. They do a double take when I hit my soft 18 against 10 and shake their head when I split 8's against a 9. If your looking for advice and ask the dealer what the basic strategy play is then expect a blank face. Basic strategy? Most of the players are as bad though...

I have seen a players 14 doubled against a dealers 10, 6's split against a dealers ace and players splitting 10's left right and centre (no they werent counting). Everyone takes insurance. The lack of basic knowledge of the game is unreal amongst players that visit the casino daily. Im sick of hearing run of the cards and dont open another box now its going well!

Your at third base and take a 5 when hitting 16 and take the 'dealers card' and recieve a torrent of abuse from the table as the dealer turns a ten (UK no hole card) to make 20. "You took the dealers bust card" they look at you like you just took a sh1t on the table! If you knew a 5 was coming then why didnt you say dear? I can give as good as I get but my poor freind who played blackjack for the first time last week left the table after 5 minutes due to the bad vibes. Its always the people who dont know how to play that have the biggest gobs.

Glad to get that off my chest. At least we still have Vegas

Whats the dumbest thing you have seen in a casino?

I once saw a tramp turn $20 into $2000 playing a blackjack side bet at the Plaza only to give it all back over the next 2 days.

I was in a casino not too long ago watching a table from behind - all 7 slots were taken. One guy bet £32.00 on a hand and pulled a snapper. The dealer struggled to work out what to pay. The floor supervisor, noticing this, came over and told him it was £42.50. I thought that just about sums things up.

As to other players, I just tell them to shut up and play their own game although I've only had to do it once.

I take it the original poster was a visitor from the States? Welcome to the UK's highly developed culture of customer service and courtesy!

This serious lack of knowledge that the UK casino's seem to have should be used to your advantage. Spread like mad and never bother with cover plays, as they haven't a clue if your plays are good or bad.

Learn to love it.

I would take our rude but error-prone dealers over the US's more professional dealers anyday.

The fact that they think that splitting 8s against a 9 is stupid is good cover for us.

The fact that we don't stand out (as much) when we split tens is great.

Would be very interested to know which casino group you are referring to?

I would say Gala at a guess? ;)
No it was a Grosvenor casino but I also had a similar experiences at Manc 235 and the Hard Rock before it closed.

After reading my post back it does sound like im a visitor but actually I live in the north west UK. Im off to vegas next month though, love the fun atmosphere in the casinos there and the better games available. Im not a counter but play for entertainment at the best games available and use a few excellent tips picked up from Fred Renzy and Stanford Wong books to trim the house edge a little further. Just a few extra basic strategy plays and keeping track of the aces.

Its probably because im not a counter that I do sometimes confront those who question my play. I have nothing to hide and just cant help myself sometimes.

From my observations I would say that many UK dealers and the UK game in general would not be too difficult to exploit by a talented counter due to the fact that the only knowledge of counting they seem to posses has been learned from watching the film 21! The dealers are more suprised by correct basic strategy plays than those splitting 10's. Of course the amount of csms is a problem, lack of casinos in close proximity and the house edge is over .05% to start with.

I saw a chap counting out loud at the table once whilst pointing at each card then doing a sum with a wrinkled forehead before finally coming to a descision to hit his 12 against the dealers 5. You gota love it!

the worst

Recently I was in a small Mississippi casino and watched dumbfounded, as a local whale bets $500
and then proceeds to accept the sarcastic comment of a ploppy to double on her soft 20.
The dealer was showing a 7 !
Needless to say she wound up stiff and the dealer had a 17.

Hey, Ch1, The general low standard of BJ play in UK is also matched in Australia. I think it's probably a world-wide thing. It could be that most irregular punters just don't want to take the time and effort to read boring charts, like BS; it's too time-consuming, and besides, they're there for some card fun. Not trying to be Rainman. You might lose or win 100. Big deal, you had some fun, a card game, a few drinks. Some of these peoples' play can be highly entertaining to behold!

Rude dealers... Hmmm. None of that happens down here, mate. If dealers here choose to get involved, it's usually only when asked. Most of them are just doing a job and don't care what you do, or don't do. This is how they are trained. In the UK, are some casinos really encouraging meddlesome, rude arseholes for staff? Down here, players would not put up with that kind of crap for one minute... What's going down with you Poms over there? I think it could be time we sent you some convicts! :cat:

Was it one of those G Casino places? I visited the one in London last year (it use to be the Hard Rock, but then hit a streak of hard luck and was rebranded). Some of the younger staff (I suspect doing their work-experience as part of their Employment Service funded training for the gaming industry) were quite pleasant, but I'm afraid that four quid for a bottle of becks was taking the pi$$. That, combined with all CSMs on the BJ tables, has meant I've put it/them (there are 6 others up and down the country) on the don't bother list. Sadly this seems to be getting longer.

Grosvenor Victoria, Napoleons, Sportsman, Rendez Vous, Palm Beach, Casino at the Empire and Gala all remain in good standing. I also look forward to the eagerly anticipated Hippodrome casino when it opens later this year in London! G Casino by far the most disappointing casino I've played at!
