My poker playing friend playing Blackjack

I went to see a movie with my friend who only plays poker for the most part, and he told me he sat down at a blackjack table just for fun.

Him: "I won $600 playing Blackjack the other day."

Me: "Wow, that's cool. Pretty lucky."

Him: "Not really."

Me: "Oh yeah?"

Him: "Yeah, I had the table to myself."

Me: "Yeah, that doesn't matter."

Him: "Um, yeah. I stood against dealer bust cards and no one else was there to ruin it!"

Me: "That's literally retarded."

Him: "Well I won $600."

Me: "You got lucky. The house always has an edge if you're just playing BS."

Him: "Well I won."

Me: "Nice. Maybe instead of going to the casino next time you just send them a check for half of the $600 you won today to save time."

I was playing at Horseshoe wee hours, circa 1999, when the WSOP broke for the night... it was then that I discovered that some of the best poker players were also some of the worst BJ players. zg

haha what a great dialogue between two friends if that is the actual dialogue.

most real poker players i know at least know their basic strategy, but don't devote any time to AP. Their game is poker and that's perfectly fine with me.

I'm sure I would be an equally bad poker player, since knowing just your outs is not enough to beat the rake.
Your math skills would serve you well. If you could read people I am sure you would kick some butts.

Ask him what rake %age he pays on his winning hands, or what entry fee/levy to join tourneys or SnGs. Then tell him the HE playing BS in Blackjack. You might see a lightbulb come on . . . . .

Part of any "butt kicking" process is to know their own limits. My poker skills are burned the second I asked someone to "show me poker", he dropped me on a online play money table. In retrospective, this is not poker. I picked up any bad habit one could say about ploppies - thinking in possibilities rather than probabilities.

Blackjack is different. Knowing only a very basic conception about the game (well, getting to 21 where Ace is soft) I didn't care much. By accident I saw a basic strategy table printed somewhere, and immediatly grasped the game. Not how to play, but how to analyse the game. I went home, made "some calculations" in excel, and out pops.... the basic strategy table. That (and the general meme the game is beatable with proper analysis) gave me the hook - not for playing, but as a hobby only a mathematician could love. Actually I hate playing that game.

I guess the conditions of initial exposure to a game is crucial for it's development of skills. It would take me a lot of time to forget all about poker, and find an analytical from-the-bottom-approach to that game.

Both games are similar as they are both skill games and you are expected to win in the long term if you study / practice, have good money management, use your head when selecting a game and have the balls to play. Scared money don't make money, but the "gamblers" of the world don't understand what that exactly means.

thats the thing. There are tons of great poker players that step up to a BJ table and make the dumbest plays imaginable.

When I sit down and see "A-K", I see a blackjack. When poker players sit down they see Big Slick.

I just find that hilarious

Always takes a little bit of time for me to adjust to playing poker after playing BJ for a few hours. Awesome, I got a 74! Let me raise my bet! Oh wait...

Its difficult to beat with the rake and tips. It makes it an even money game for me, so I play for cover mostly.

It can be a very low cost cover if you play only the very best hands, and sit out often when the blinds to come to you and wait for the blinds - bring a book to read or do your taxes at the table or some other activity so its not a complete waste of time .
