Dumbest thing I've heard said at the table

This really has nothing to do with strategy just an overall consensus...

What are some of the dumbest thing you hear either the ploppies or dealers say?

Some lines that I hear on a regular basis that put people on a brain function level comprable to Terri Shiavo:

"A Push is a Win"

"It's a good idea to insure a 20 because if they dealer doesn't have blackjack chances are you win."

"Sure you won that hand by standing on 14 against a dealer 10, but now you've messed up the cards."

"Always split A's and 8's."

"Sure I lost $500 but at least I got a free buffet."

That isn't that stupid.

Once I heard someone say, "I prefer shoe games." That made me laugh to myself for a second, but then I realized that that is really not that dumb either.

....And, How about?

(Dealer) "why hit on A7 v.10. You already have an 18?
(ploppie)"Single Deck tables have better odds....(while camped at a 6:5 slaughter house)
(ploppie)"You should never take insurance unless you know Basic Strategy"
(Dealer)"Gee Sir!" That's the 5th time in a row that you "guessed "right taking insurance (when the PB is near by)
(ploppie)"I always split 2's against anything up. You can't ever draw 2 10's in a row."
(ploppie)"Always split 5's instead of doubling. You get to draw more cards that way!"
And the casinos are paranoid because of a few of us AP's?? GO FIGURE

You might have hated his saying it, but the dealer saying that it was the 5th time in a row you guessed right, is a dangerous animal, a dealer looking to move up in the casino food chain. If said referring to me, I would take that as an invitation to go to another casino.

You got that one right!

After hearing that "brilliant " comment from that moron dealer I felt very queasy and shortly thereafter told her to color me up 'cause I just saw a spot open in a nearby 6:5 game.

But is it really that smart? the 88 is the one I have the biggest issue with. Against a dealer 10 in a good count. Do you really want two hands of 18 when the dealer most likely has 20?

Yeah, the one time I got "asked to leave" was when I took insurance bets on stiffs 3 times in a row and was right each time.

If the game has surrender you surrender that hand in a positive count.

But...unless the count is outrageously high the dealer probably doesn't have 20. And you probably won't have 2 hands of 18. All you will have for sure is 2 hands of 8 against a dealer's 10 up.

There might be some count where in a non-surrender game you are better off standing than splitting 88 vs. 10, but that's not an important play to know.

Well I mean it is basic strategy so they are giving good advice.

I say "a push is like a win" quite often. After all, if you're just a ploppie or even a BS player, then a long string of pushes would be better than you'd expect.

I usually grouse and complain more when an insurance bet actually pays off than when it doesn't. I'm not sure if that makes me retarded like a fox, or just retarded.

It's usually the "ploppies" who have a problem with splitting 8's, not the other way around. But the most seriously stupid thing I have heard at a BJ table was when a woman glanced at a basic strategy chart and said "Those are probably made up by the casino so you lose more money".

The Dumbest thing I have ever heard at the table was said by yours truly, while playing hand held game the player sitting next to me, asked me what cards I had, I lifted my cards so he could see and replied plus 3. He or no one else seem to catch on what I did, but talk about feeling stupid.
Splitting 8s has always been a defensive play for me, 16 is the worst hand you can possibly have, so if you can win on one hand, and lose on the other making the hand a push, then that is much improved over an almost guarantteed loss that you will have if you stand.

I agree with you.

I never split 88 when the dealer has 9 or 10.

But I do split AA every time.

Not splitting 8,8 vs. 10 will cost you -0.06% while 8,8 vs. 9 will cost a whopping -0.12%. The combined conditional effect of these two mistakes is about -0.2%. That's more money down the drain...

To the BS player there isn't much difference. The house edges are very close. Although they should still prefer the pitch games because there is more frequen shuffling, which translates to less money lost per hour.

an important point

We can post on this board and make fun of the dumb things a ploppy might say on the table, but I think we all should know and remember these things and then say them at appropriate times ourselves. We do want the pit tho think we are ploppys so speak ploppyish.

Often there are indice plays that are ploppy plays when done with no regard to the count. Negative count, minimum bet and you hit your 12 vs dealer 5, because either your feelings tell you a 6 is coming or the flow told you so. Split your tens at a high count, and it is because you saw another guy do this and have always been tempted and there is not an ace on the board. We do need people around the game to believe we are just another crazed gambler.

Once while at 3rd base,I stayed on a four card 16 against a ten.Of course the next card was a 5 and dealer made his hand.First base was livid, telling me I screwed the rest of the two deck shoe(downtown Vegas).
When he was dealt a BJ next hand,I jokingly reminded him that if not for me,he wouldn't have gotten it.
Freaking guy said he didn't want the BJ and took a hit on it.When he lost he said that was two hands I'd screwed him on,and the table looked at me like I was hanging around a mens room in Times Square. What had been a fun table got real ugly real fast.

Dumbest sayings

I split nines once, and the player at first base said, "Never mess up a winning hand." He was also the guy that, when entering the game, said "I just want everybody to know I AM AN AGRESSIVE PLAYER." I

I really don't know what being an "agressive" player is! He should have just said he was an arrogant *#@!
