$60 Gift

Last night while wasting time between tournament rounds I sat down at a $5 table. After a few hands I had a $30 bet out. There were 5 of us at the table. First base had 17, next was 20, next was 19, I had 19 and third base had 10. The dealer had an A up. The 20 took insurance but the dealer didn't have BJ so he lost that. 3rd base was the only one to take a hit and he got an 8 for 18.

Dealer turns up his down card and it's another A. He calls it 2, then he draws a 9 and calls it 11, then a 3 and finally another 3 calling it 17. The dealer pays each of his except for 1st base, he took his bet. 1st base said, wait a minute didn't I push. I thought we were sunk at that point because the dealers generally call the pit critter over when that happens. This time he didn't. He looked at 1st base's hand and said it was a 17, then counted his another time and still got 17 and said "Oops, you're right it's a push" and gave him $5 back. 1st base said he bet $15. Again I thought we were sunk, but again the dealer just said "Oh, sorry" and gave him $10 more.

So thanks to at least 4 mistakes by the dealer I was up $30 instead of down $30. I'll take a $60 gift anytime!

Usually, a sociable dealer will joke around with players on those soft hands and try to trap them into taking a hit on soft 21. I've never seen a dealer allow a player to hit a soft 21 though....they usually say something like "Today, we'll count that as 21" when the player indicates a hit after the dealer has called it 11.

Gift horses such as your $30 hand don't happen that often <grin>.

Most of the dealers where I play do that. I usually just say "I'll stand with my 11.". I get some weird looks from people that aren't paying attention till they realize it.

A couple weeks ago I was at the same casino playing at a table with a family, it was grandpa's birthday so they were having a good time. A young lady had an A-5. Dealer gave her a 5 and called it 11. The lady motioned for a hit and her whole family reacted, dealer told me there is no way she would've given her a hit.

I was playing at a table in Oklahoma last week (the ante State!) and they had a promotion going on for the month of June. They were paying even money for 5-Card-Charlie. A young man was sitting next to me and hadn't played much before. He had a 4-card soft 20 against a dealer face and was going to stand on it. The dealer had to practically beg him to hit the hand! Thinking he was being conned by the dealer, he turned to me and I explained that if he stood, he would probalby push but if he hit, he would have 5 cards and an automatic win no matter what either he or the dealer got. He had this increduluous look on his face, still not understanding, but took the hit and got paid.

Usually, in situations like that (and with the soft 21), everyone gets a good laugh and everything's cool. But I've seen players get mad because they thought the dealer was trying to cheat them. Or, maybe they can't stand being the butt end of a joke.

the Grand at Tunica

This past May a lady at my table ($5) had a soft 21(several cards), She called 4 a hit....a young female dealer gave her a card...Another player yelled at the dealer....THE DEALER SAID " PLAYERS HAVE BEEN DOING THAT ALL WEEKEND!" The player that yelled inferred that dealers that do things like that get few tips. The card given 2 her was a 10! No change in her 21 but the dealer's attitude made me leave the table. If this had been at a $25 table, I expect players to understand the game.....but many $5 players are just learning. Dealers with attitude take the fun out of the game. I know a dealer at the Horseshoe (Tunica) and she says lots of dealers love 2 see players loose!

I've never had that happen at a table I was playing at. Certainly, it is the player's responsibility to keep count of their hand. But, if I even saw it happen to someone else, I would call the floor over and tell him what happened and that I wouldn't be playing at their casino any longer...at least not with that dealer! Now, I know a dealer could unintentionally allow something like that to happen and if they do have a sincere attitude, I'd probably overlook it. But if there was any hint that it was deliberate, I'd raise hell.

Aa9

The
Dealer should have stopped after giving him/herself the 9, A + A = 2 or 12+9=21
but the dealer did everyone a favour by still taking cards, if the PB saw him/her do that, they would have sent him/her home

Happy BJing
