Help for Naive Blackjack player please

#1
Hello all. This is my 1st post.
I live in the UK. Recently just for amusement I bought a copy of Hoyle Blackjack DVD. This has spawned an interest to know more about the game with the hope of playing for real. Though as of yet I have never been in a casino in my life, know very little of Blackjack and the jargon surrounding it and have only ever bet on the horses.
I have read Humble and Cooper’s The Worlds Greatest Blackjack Book which is a bit out of date on the English gambling scene (not sure if it matters).
I understand that English rules (rules not liked by most gamblers) are unique and the dealer has no hole card and the doubling and surrender rules are different from most. It also seems that UK casinos shuffle quite often which would destroy any counting advantage. I am sure that most of the advice given by Humble and Cooper is sound for all games I wonder what doesn’t apply to the UK.
I would be most grateful for any advice on further reading on strategies etc. and how to gain greater experience without getting skinned
