Poker is for degens!/My delusional life

Posted this on a local bicycle forum today (edited it slightly..)

Hey guys and gals, my name is Edward. I am 21 yrs old. I am a card counter/AP turned degenerate poker player who quit his job while completely broke to chase a girl from Seattle to Kansas. I discovered that she is very violent, and I ended up in jail after attempting to defend myself. Once my legal trouble was settled I had no choice but to beg my parents for a flight ticket and come home.

Now I am home at my parents house and I want to run away from this entire situation. I previously was living in Seattle dealing cards at a small casino. Now I shudder at the thought of going back to work for casinos. They are infiltrated with the most incoherent low-life's I have ever witnessed.

My plan is to gather some clothes, food, and sleeping supplies and hop on my bicycle and head to Reno, NV(approx. 570 miles). I would like to find some work in Reno and a place to stay for awhile. Although my spirits are bright and I maintain a positive attitude I must say my situation is on the brink of desperation(admittedly, by choice).

Anyways.. I came here to ask for advice. I am not an experienced bicycle rider. I bought a Marin Muirwoods a few years ago and have gone on some short rides, but I have very little bicycle knowledge. I came here to ask what you all think I should know to be as prepared as possible. Things such as what to bring, what route to take, where I can camp out safely, etc. would be very helpful. If anyone has an empty couch or shower along my way I may be able to offer some sort of labor or be greatly indebted.

Thank you!

I am not firm on going to Reno(Vegas would be cool, Tucson seems attractive if I can ever muster up another bankroll.. I was in Wendover last month seems like it might be tough to find a place to stay there), but I want to go on an adventure and I have no money. If anyone has somewhere I can stay while I get back on my feet I could possibly be of AP assistance(playing coupons/promo's, scouting, spotting, etc.). I play hi-lo proficiently with about 80 indice's. I have a little bit of HC experience too. I realize I'm going out on a serious limb here, but what the hell.. Someday I'll just look back and laugh as long as I'm not dead.

This is either the biggest joke post ever, or a VERY immature person. No one is going to take you into their home, other than another predatory person; probably even WORSE than your ex-girlfriend was.

Stay home with your parents until you can get your ducks in a row. You're simply not ready to set out on this "adventure".

Just find a room key to any hotel and you can sleep at their pool during the day for free, also, free bath room, holla! All mgms have free food in the baccarat area, but I suspect you will need good timing and stealth. Is wish you good luck but i think you'll have it all sorted out in no time

Sorry everyone, I am gonna bite and answer as if its a serious question...

Where are you starting from on your trek to Reno?

How are you going to carry luggage?

If you haven't been riding a lot, I think a 570 mile ride will end up being pretty painful.

All in all though, I can't think of a place you could be coming from where it would be at all sensible to ride a bicycle to Reno. If you are on the West Coast, be advised there are mountains between where you are at and Reno. I would not advise trying to ride a bike over these mountains unless you are in very good cycling shape. If you are east of Reno, be advised, there are hundreds of miles of desert between you are Reno. It's summer, you should not try to bike across the desert on your own, you would need to carry a lot of water to make this crossing (there aren't many towns in the desert either), and water is very heavy and bulky to carry.

I highly suggest that you do not attempt this ride. But if you do, please let me know so I can buy a life insurance policy on you as you will likely die.

I think he is not serious about riding a bicycle to Reno. By putting his life in danger, maybe some gambler would save a life and help another gambler out.

Or more likely; some entrepreneurial gambler will start an over/under pool as to how far he gets before he dies. :p

Seattle to Reno by bike is 759 mi. I came up with a route on my own (with avoiding mountains and elevation changes in mind) and then tried it on Google maps and google agrees with me. You go Seattle to Portland (not on I-5 obv, you will be on the old Pacific highway for much of this part), then on to Bend and pretty much a straight line south from Bend, through Alturas on to Reno. Water will not be much of an issue until you get south of Bend, but you will be in a world of hurt at that point. The temperatures this time of year should be fairly pleasant, maybe a tad hot during the day, but will cool off quickly as the sun goes down on the southern portion of your route. Biking time is 67 hours. Good luck.

The section from Portland to Bend, still includes a climb from 152 ft to 1972 ft and then another climb from 1250 ft to 4883 ft. The second climb is an average incline of 8.5% for more than 7 miles. While this is certainly much less elevation change than crossing to Reno from California, I think its still a climb that the average person could not accomplish on a bicycle. Factor in the mountain road aspect and I think this is still a nearly certain path for death.

Finally even with this route, the last approach to Reno is going to cover some relatively sparse territory which would require carrying more than just two bike bottles of water to cross.

My opinion is still death this way.

Anyone organizing over/under pool? How are we going to verify when he's actually deceased?

All joking aside... I don't think the op is ready.... Sounds like a young boy who is acting out impulsively... DON'T DO IT!

How about pounding the 'Hound from Seattle to Reno for $100? It's bound to be cheaper than the expenses you would incur in a week or two of bicycling. If they won't let you bring your bike, sell it in Seattle and buy one in Reno.

Its actually quite amazing how much money you can accrue simply by not paying rent or mortgage. After I graduated from college, I worked and lived at home for a bit, and had more money than I knew what to do with. Wish that was true now :)

Wow, you guys are so negative. I say go for it. You are young, single, and so what if you don't make it. You'll call someone, borrow money or whatever but you will have an adventure. Go out and live your life to the fullest. You're sure to end up with some interesting stories.

As an alternative you could also try hitch hiking at truck stops. I helped out many a folk in need to move distances. be prepared to be searched, as I always did/do if the situation arises. Also, most truck drivers will give you a free shower coupon at the truck stop, and maybe a free meal too. The world isn't as grim as most here say it is.

good luck, and check in with us. Interested to see where this goes...

Question about shower at the truck stop. Do people get individual stalls or just group showering room? If it is the latter, the young guy might get raped.

You get a private room, of course. Contrary to what you may have heard about truckers, a truck stop is probably the SAFEST place to be when traveling.

There's a truck stop near me that will not allow in the showers anyone without a CDL. Presumably this is to keep that kind of activity at a minimum. However the truck stop showers I've seen have been locker-room style.

Actual truckers have a low rate of drug/alcohol use and a low tolerance for misbehavior around them or their rigs. But any place on a highway is going to see it's share of all kinds of people passing through, including fugitives and traveling crooks, so you can't really let your guard down at a truck stop.
