I've heard from several people the updated book will be leaving out a lot of information in the original to keep some opportunities open longer. How true is this?

This doesn't makes sense but I hope it is true and he has put new material in instead of rewriting the first book.

Did "Beat the Dealer" kill card counting?

Books don't kill games, players do.
True, but I think players who learn from books alone are more likely to kill a game than those who learn from experience and contact with other experienced players. It's a lot easier to teach an enthusiastic player how to play an advantage game with a book than to teach him how to protect a game in a book.

The biggest problem I have with implementing those kinds of techniques is sneaking the midget into the casino. Do any stores still have dwarf tossing? :joker:

Funny Midget Story

I once walked into my local joint and saw a very soft game that I wanted to play. Unfortunately, the table was full, and, particularly, the "lucky" seat was taken. The guy wasn't actually seated--he was a midget playing standing up, which put his chin barely above the table railing! (Normally, players are not allowed to play standing, but they didn't enforce the rule on this guy.) The midget was playing the table max, with no "bonus" side bet. I was seriously irritated that some unknown crew was willing to jeopardize this game by unnecessarily resorting to the ol' Midget Gambit, which I thought was more urban myth than legitimate tactic. I watched for a moment and something became apparent--it was all a coincidence! The midget was just a gambler, and he vacated the game after five or ten minutes. I sat down with great relief and played on, with no other interesting midget encounters [until last week, but that's another story ...]

What a player gleans from Grosjean is not things that can easily kill a game. Holecarding has been around for decades, most casinos still take hole cards.

Remember that Beyond Counting is for the pro by the pro.

Are the things that are discussed in that book similar to the things talked about on here, or are they above and beyond?
This fourm is about blackjack. The most popular topics appear to me to be, in order
1) counting
2) conditions at casinos
3) discussing insane betting progressions
4) hyped up stories of glory or bad beats

Grosjean's book doesn't talk about any of these. Less than half his book is committed to blackjack and little of that is committed to counting.
