"I think Siena will be next, not surviving the winter."
Having spent the week there recently late this summer I could definitely sense a change "in the air". The new comp rating system hit me like a ton of bricks, about 1/3 of the value for the same amount of play, then I heard rumors of them dropping DOA from their SD games. What a shame! Eeking out an extra lousy .25% from a dozen BJ tables while turning off a loyal customer base. What business sense is that? I realize that the current state of the economy there is pretty bleak, however someone needs to think a little bit outside the box here, rather than the same 'ol crawl into the bunker mentality that obviously doesn't work.
The situation in Northern Nevada is a result of the "perfect storm", a combination of a general weakening of the national economy, huge increases in gas prices, a particularly hard-hit housing market caused by the sub-prime fiasco and most devastating of all, the competition from the two Injun casinos on either side of Sacramento, Thunder Valley and Cache Creek.
The Siena in particular needs to assess these conditions and address them head on, if possible. There is nothing anyone can do about the national economy or the foreclosure situation right now, except grunt it out; however there are several avenues of redress available to the Siena management which, in my opinion, could begin to turn things around.
The first is not to alienate the loyal locals. The concept of a "locals" casino is what makes the Siena unique as well as competitive. In just the week I spent in Reno in mid-September I heard the muttering at several tables in other houses. These folks represent the bread and butter of their customer base and should be the last people the Siena needs to piss off.
Secondly, since it's location is several blocks off the main drag and not readily visible to the occasional tourist, they need to run a "jitney"-type shuttle down Virginia St. and ferry the heavy concentration of traffic from the Circus/ Legacy/ ElDorado and provide free, easy access to their property. The bottom line--It's all about getting butts in the seats, folks!
Since the main engine of Reno's economy is driven by the Sacrament/Bay Area commuter, it is incumbent upon Reno's business leaders to make it as attractive as possible to lure the weekend warriors up the hill and bypass the two "tempting" Indian obstacles standing in the way. Free or cheap gas promos would go a long way right about now. The ElDorado is promoting a $25/ night gas credit and Boomtown is offering gas @$2.99 to it's hotel guests. Hello Siena! It's time to wake up. Why not try a free gallon voucher with every suited BJ at the $10 min. tables? You never know, it just might work.
Short of actually moving out there and running against Cashell for mayor I just thought I'd throw out a few inexpensive suggestions for the fine folks in charge of the "Biggest Little City in the World" before they have to put out the FOR SALE sign.

Have you had the Kobe Beef Burger in the diner - Contrada? It is amazing , IMO. I have had it the last 3 times there and it is consistently perfect. When I am in the downtown area I will go there just for that burger. And it is only 7.99 w/ fries. and the other night they gave me free desert.
