In the old days we used to memorize everything. Somewhere along the line that aspect of education went out the window. I remember memorizing the UN Charter. And it had to be memorized word for word. We memorized everything--multiplication tables, the Latin Mass, long poems, song lyrics, Gettysburg Address, Declaration of Independence, Geometry theorems, speeches, vocabulary, etc.--
