Default Splitting 8's?

So, BS says to split 8's always.

This makes me wonder about certain situations, splitting 8's vs 5,6 sure but against 10 or ace?

If the count is high and you split 8's vs dealer 10 and Ace, best bet is you end up with 2 18's and dealer makes 20 or 21... I haven't seen any indice for this.

Doesn't it seem like a bad play to split 8's in a high count?

I guess on the other hand 16 vs 10 or ace is also bad, I mean you get surrender and win 50% of your money back as opposed to 16v10 hit at 44% success or 16v10 stand at 47% success...

What are you thoughts on 8's?
Always split?

If there is surrender, it's different. But splitting eights loses less money than hitting or standing. You may catch a 3 and double, and the dealer may have a 2-7 in the hole, which makes it positive expectation.

And, YES, when the count is sufficiently high its correct to stand on 8s (and other stiffs) vs 10s. zg

Default splitting 8's

you are right mixolydian87. Sometimes splitting 8's can be tough. It's one of those defensive moves. Either way is a bad situation, but splitting loses less in the long run. Still, even knowing the math, I sometimes cringe when I split 8's with a large bet out and lose my 18 and 19 to the dealers 20.

And if Surrender is allowed, any positive True Count is Surrender.
