Safety issues in DownTown reno

are there any areas where one should be concerned walking around with a large amount of bills in their pocket while visiting Reno, NV?

As a point of reference, if the neighborhood/locale is less safe than the area surrounding the Western I would like to know about it ahead of time
i'll have a car, but if casinos are close and i can burn some shoe (p)leather walked rather than petrol driving I will.... if there are some places you shouldn't walk to please advise. (i'm street smart, semi-large and in charge and not timid, but if their are gun toting fools roaming like tumbleweeds that info would be useful). T.I.A.

i cant remember any spots from a couple years ago but this would come in handy for me as well since im leaving tommorrow. i usually walked through the casinos to avoid the streets though

No problems on Virginia St. between the casinos. The Siena, on one end, is kind of isolated and at night you might want to be careful walking to and from that one. Past Circus Circus, on the other end, towards the Walgreen's and BofA also has a few undesirables walking around sometimes. The non-casino areas of town have a few impoverished areas that can be dangerous, and you'll recognize them when you see them.

No part of Reno is as dangerous as the area around and beyond the Western.

Monk's pretty much right about that part of Va. Street south of Harrah's. It's a little too far to walk to the Siena with a boat load of cash. Just take the car down to Mill St. and hang a left, once you're on Siena property, you're as safe as Bin-Laden in a bunker. When walking from the Circus to the El Dorado, just take the "internal" walkway through to Silver Legacy. You can make it all the way to the south entrance of the El Dorado which puts you maybe 100 ft. from Fitz's. Just look out for the bums and holy rollers by the overpass before making your way outside. From there it's a hop across to the Evil Empire. The Sands is a different story so take the car, park close and you still have to watch it in the parking lot. Stay away from Cal-Neva for multiple reasons.

I agree 100% with BJ Bob, Eldorado to Fitz is only a short walk but a little sketchy, however it is usually a pretty busy intersection so its not that bad. I beleive I have been followed a few times by some guys coming from this street but once inside the casino they turn around and go the other way. There is no need to go to harahs or Cal neva because all the SD games in there are 6 to 5 anyways. Just be smart and dont flash the roll and youll be totally safe. O and dont forget Boomtown, they have a great SD Game. Just play late at night or early morning and you will be able to avoid the buffet crowd.

Not true. Cal Neva spreads 6 to 5 games in two pits, but 3 to 2 in the others. Tourists don't seem to know the difference, but you will. While playing at the Cal Neva has its problems, there aren't so many wonderful games left in town that I think you can just write off that casino. Harrah's has one lonely 3 to 2 single deck table. It usually has a $25 minimum, but that can go higher at busy times. There are additional 3 to 2 tables in the high limit area that may or may not be open when you visit.

It's rare any more for Boomtown to have what I'd call a crowd, any day or night of the week. Unfortunately, they only have one pit left, and they seem to follow the policy that so many casinos have of trying to keep whatever tables are open full, and closing tables any time business thins out.

Yes, that was a shame, there used to be good conditions there for hours on end and then they eliminated a pit and replaced it with... what?

I don't see the point of closing tables every time there are two open seats. Why? They have no idea how many people walk by, see the tables are full and keep on walking. Maybe they are trying to manipulate statistics, if there's a stat for drop-per-hour or something.
