Prepare for chaos: U.S. electoral system warned it
'can't cope' as historic number of voters cast their ballot

The American presidential election could descend into electoral chaos on Tuesday as unprecedented numbers of voters turn out to cast their ballot in a system that is largely untested.
The U.S. has an electoral system that is not organised, designed or funded to cope with 'anywhere near a 100 per cent turnout', a director of a leading independent electoral reform group has said.
As an estimated 130million Americans head to the polls, Doug Chapin, director of The Pew Charitable Trust's Electionline.org, said voter turnout will 'dwarf' all other problems in this year's presidential election.

I arrived at the polls 25 minutes before they opened. I was probably about 70th or more in line. After the polls opened at 6am it took about twenty minutes to go through the process. At my polling location in Fairfax, VA, they had both computerized and manual voting systems in play to provide for a greater number of voters at one time. I'll bet nearly everyone voted down the one bond issue on the ballot (who is going to vote for park improvements in this economy?). Most the voters were McCain supporters judging from who took a GOP and who took a Dem sample ballot while standing in line.
Ot was the longest line I ever saw at this voting location. Generally, if you arrive fifteen minutes before the polls open you are about thirtieth in line. This time the line was about 120 to 150 people long by that time. It could be attributed in part to the forecast for rain later on. No one wants to wait in the rain to vote and the inside line can only accommodate about fifty people. When I left the line ws about 200 people long.
