Two Visual Maps of the Internet
How peer-to-peer makes the net better
Researchers have discovered that peer networks may help make the net work better - and more beautifully.
MIT's Technology Review ran an article this week about mapping the internet - by friend of Techblog and fellow Brightonian Duncan Graham-Rowe.
It follows some research done to work out how the internet is organised that's being done by researchers at Bar Ilan University. What they've found is interesting - and, when represented graphically, pretty astounding.

In the centre are the crucial nodes that connect to everything, and on the outside the bits that don't connect to much. There's also a mantle of nodes connected to each other.
Some think it's "gorgeous", while others say it's art.

The core: At the center of the Internet are about 80 core nodes through which most traffic flows. Remove the core, and 70 percent of the other nodes are still able to function through peer-to-peer connections.
PS- Where did you find your second image, zg? I'd like to study the labels at the core, which are too small to make out.

Not ZG, but you can simply right click on the image to get the url.

But the resulotion is the same.
from this site:

3 YOU STILL WON'T GET TO HAWAII
Hubs in Honolulu—and all over the Pacific—connect to only a few other hubs, which means your data are highly unlikely to pass through the Aloha State

So no internet in Hawaii but then again I would spend my time on other things there!

Here's another - this one is a hologram:
"The Internet is not a thing, a place, a single technology,
or a mode of governance. It is an agreement. "
-- John Gage, Director of Science, Sun Microsystems, Inc.
This illustrates in 3-D the actual domains and connections of the world wide web. Colors have been added to represent .edu, .gov, .com, etc. domains. I've always seen the web as bubbles - some large, some small - and vectors - thick or thin. This is the best graphic device I've seen to show that connectivity.

At first glance, I thought it might be an enhanced view of the universe.
