I am not sure if this belongs here or in the LV forum. But here we go.
You: A girl, early 20's from WA, staying at the Plaza on your spring break. You joined me for DD blackjack at a joint downtown with good rules and pen.
I was going about my business, using a gentle, but profitable spread with some cover betting thrown in.
You spread from 5 to 2x 45 when the count got quite high. I give you a knowing look as you throw those massive bets out there, as I know what you're up to. Your mildly embarrassed look confirmed you knew that I knew what you were doing. The smart thing to do would have been to not give you that tell, but I couldn't help it. I've never met another counter in real life so it was tough to hide my reaction.
Predictably, you ask the dealer how much you need for insurance as the dealer shows an Ace vs. your two massive bets that got checks play called.
I have no choice but to insure also. Good thing the other people at the table were also hoping for a dealer BJ and all took insurance, so I didn't stand out. Boom, dealer blackjack. Very few small cards came out, so you predictably backed down your bet.
You proceeded to make small talk, asking us where we are from, where we are staying, etc. I mention that the BJ where I was playing was very poor (Excalibur) which was a big mistake. You go on to mention that the "MGM properties" near me have good games "if you wong in."
First, DO YOUR HOMEWORK. Playing like this will not be tolerated for long, especially at this store. A monster spread like this is begging to be backed off, and fast. This isn't WA state, maybe they tolerate that on DD games there, but not here.
Second, YOU KNEW I WAS COUNTING. And you knew I knew you were counting. There were other tables open, you should yield to the AP who was there first, right? I don't want your foolish spread to get the Eye watching my table all day.
Third, don't EVER, and I mean EVER, use terminology like "wong in" at a blackjack table. Period. That is the epitome of stupidity. Lucky no floorperson was in earshot when you let that slip out. Fortunately for you, I don't think the dealer knew enough English to care about what you were saying.
And finally, it was my pleasure to wong out on you at a heavily negative count. I am not eating cards for your benefit. Although I wish I would have stuck around to see the heat come down on you, as it almost certainly would have. But as it was, I had a good win for the session and unlike you, had no interest in being backed off from one of the most playable small stakes casinos in LV.
Get a clue. Sure, you know the technical points of winning blackjack. But playing in the real world is something entirely different. Your tactic would have been okay, if you left after that shoe. But somehow, I don't think you did.
And somehow I doubt the female PCs cut you any slack cause you're a girl. I wish I would have stuck around to see you get backed off. Even if I got made too as colateral damage, I would have loved to see it.
Don't take any of this personally, you seemed like a nice enough kid. But you need to learn some of the finer points of advantage play. There's more to it than spreading and taking insurance at high counts. A lot more.
