Estimating Decks in Discard Holder
What is the best way to practice this? Should I go buy a discard holder and 8 identical decks? (i must have 20 decks of cards but rarely are more than 2 the exact same)
I have tried using the flash card skill trainer in CVDrills and it is not working well at all...Is it worth just forking out the 10$ or so and grab a holder? I was looking at grabbing a shoe too...what the hell why not have the whole set ; p
Thoughts plz
Edit: Oh this is for 8 deck practice...how should I be counting the decks? Half, Whole, Quarter? Should I change when there are less decks left?

Flash card skill trainer? I'm assuming you mean the discard drill. If it doesn't help, I suppose purchasing a discard tray will help. Since you have CVBJ, theres not much need for a shoe. As to your edit, the more accurate your estimation, the better. But if you have a choice, I would assume its better to have more accuracy near the end of the shoe, as that is more sensitive to the count.

Not all decks are the same size in length, width, and thickness...so buy 8 identical decks--ideally the same manufacturer of where you'll be playing at--or go to the gift shop and buy 8 of their decks there. Although I'd encourage you to play 6 deck games vs. 8--I say boycott 8 decks and tell everyone you know or one day they might decide to offer 10 (but that's a whole different debate that could set off a small skirmish if I say anything more).
Practice knowing all the most important half-deck reference points all the way down to the exact single card at the point: IE. 1/2 a deck, 1 deck, 1 1/2 decks, etc.
Make a thin cardboard template with color-coded reference points in various highlighter colors that you can slide behind the cards in the discard tray in order to check yourself.
Best regards,
FD

down to half deck level is fine.
buy a discard tray and 8 (or more) identical decks, and number your cards 1-416 on the faces. place cards (in order, faced down) in random amounts and practice guessing how many cards (to the nearest half deck) are in there. repeat over and over for a day or two straight and youll quickly train your eye.

I can give you a slick way to do it but only with a pm and you will keep it to yourself, or I will have to kill you.

That's part of the whole debate: proponents of 6D as a maximum advise saving your money and traveling to 6D games rather than giving in to 8 decks (because that's what the casinos want you to do)...but I guess I've said enough (again).

I have been pummeled with PM's about my deck estimation post. Thanks for the interest.
A few MMOA members have expressed a concern about my exposing this secret and have objected, so I will honor their wishes.
However... after discussing it I will reveal it to the attendees, and future MMOA members, at the upcoming "BJ BASH".
Sorry again XUR and all the others who sent PM's.
