Trip Report.
Hi everyone, firstly let me thank everyone here for the advice I got prior to my recent trip, some invaluable advice that made my trip a whole lot of fun. Thanks gang!
Firstly stayed at the MGM Grand in west wing room, the $20 at check in was worth it, thanks to the person who put me onto that idea.
Signed up for the players card and talked with a host – I did this just after wonging in to a green table, and the Pitboss was most accommodating. The host was ok, I think she was really busy so just got me signed up and came back with the card, never saw her again until I rang at checkout.
Overall I was in Vegas for 4 days, and had some awesome fun, overall ended up 23 units ahead.
Played a bit at the MGM, and here is what I found, I played the $25 tables and often these tables turned into 50 and 100 min tables from about 4pm ish onwards, one table I played at even became a 500 minimum on the Friday night. So it was great being grandfathered in at the reduced rate, it meant I was playing the best rules without having to fork out as much money.
My first day there was a total washout, I lost my daily limit within about 4 hours, and I was totally smarting big time, not a happy camper, so I basically went out at about 10pm and enjoyed the lights, and the scenery (the two legged female variety, ZOMG!)
Second day I played a bit in the morning, and won a few units back, then headed over to the Mandalay bay, which I had never been to before, its rules were similar to MGM’s except the minimums were a bit lower, but I did like the atmosphere there a lot more, not as smokey, and the dealers were much nicer.
As a non American I found the tipping difficult, and I only tipped a unit after a long session with a dealer in which I came out ahead, I never tipped when I lost (I hope that was ok?)
Had a lovely dinner at the Mandalay bay at the steak joint – stripsteak, was wicked, the Kobe beef was amazing – never had that b4 either. Ended up day 2 with about half the money back from the loss the day before, which was a bit heartening.
Day 3 I played in the morning poker tourney at the MGM, im not much of a poker player but it was fun, I ended up at 35ish out of 98 so I was happy with my effort even though I got no money out of it. – I really enjoyed the poker as the players were a lot of fun, as it was NCAA weekend/spring break, some really funny amazing people and poker allowed more chit chat etc.
After the poker tourney I headed back to Mandalay bay again, using the monorail/tram thing from Excalibur, and played until late evening, again got grandfathered in which made the good rules great at my level of play. After dinner there as I wasn’t grandfathered in anymore and the good tables were beyond my means I played some craps, and again im not much of a craps player, but this was amazing and awesome fun, 10 line bet, and a couple of number bets.
Anyways the craps was the highlight of my trip (who would have thought!), I had a roll of around 35 minutes in which case I won maybe 300 bucks, but another player up the other end of the table who was betting in black and purple won around 35k of me. He and his posse was ecstatic, and thanked me very much, he then reserved the table so only he and I could play (I didn’t even know that was possible) he was also cashing in notes of paper from the pitboss, which I assume was a line of credit of some sort?) Anyways it got late and I was feeling tired, and I thanked the high roller very much, as I turned out his name was Winky Wright and was some sort of boxer who was there for a fight in a few weeks, I had no idea at all who he was, but he was a hell of a nice guy.
Overall day 3 mainly thanks to the blackjack with a bit of craps was back to my starting funds.
Last day was the Saturday and the crowd had really picked up the tables mins were also much higher and I was playing a little out of my league. In the morning I took a quick drive to the premium outlet mall to get stuff for the wife and kids, after all I had to keep them in the good books.
I ended up leaving at around 3pm to get back to LA for the flight home and I was up a grand total of 23 units.
Prior to checking out I rang the host who got back to me about 15 mins later and she comped me 3 nights (couldn’t do the Saturday night) and comped all my meals, including the ones from the Mandalay bay, only thing she said she couldn’t comp was the internet (no idea why?)
I drove back to LA again stopping in Barstow for fuel/pee break/food
Overall I had an amazing time, the rules were great, the tables were great, the heads up play was great, the comps were good, and the fact I came out marginally ahead after all costs made it even better. But to be honest the experience was worth it even if I lost.
Ill defiantly be going back, and my tip to others for what its worth is play midweek it was way better than the weekend.
Oh and as promised in other threads here is a photo of me which I took wearing my reverse psychology counter-counter-counter camouflage. ( and before you ask, no I didn’t really wear this in the casino
