Default Nigerian Scam New Twist

VENTURE RESEARCH INSTITUTE

NIGERIAN 419 SCAM - NEW SOPHISTICATED TECHNIQUE USING FAKE BANK WEBSITES TO FALSELY ''CONFIRM'' MONEY ON DEPOSIT

The FBI has become aware of a new sophisticated technique used to obtain funds through the 419 scam.

The scam contains the usual e-mail requesting assistance in transferring millions of dollars out of Nigeria.

The sophistication begins when the recipient is directed to open a bank account at a Suffolk England Bank and is provided a link to the bank's Web site.

After clicking the link, the victim is directed to a professional-looking bank Web site which appears to be that of Suffolk England Bank; however, it is actually a replica of the true bank site.

Within hours after opening the account, a balance of millions of dollars appears to have been deposited in the victim's account.

When attempting to transfer or withdraw funds from the account, the victim receives a notice requiring certain "fees" to be paid. The victim is then instructed to wire transfer the fees to Africa.

If the victim makes an inquiry concerning the wire transfer, they are given instructions for a Bank of China branch in London and provided some reason justifying why the Suffolk England Bank cannot handle the transfer.

Review of the wiring instructions indicated the funds are actually being transferred to the Bank of China in Beijing.

Always be cautious of e-mail inviting you to provide your personal and/or financial information.

Default I Got One About A Year Ago

So I replied to it and thanked the gentleman profusely. I explained I really didn't need the 8 million dollars he had in my name and if he would be so kind as to just send me 1 million he could keep the other 7 million for himself as he is such a kind and generous fellow! He replied back saying that he thought by the tone of my reply that I wasn't taking him seriously!!! Wow.
I replied back that I was taking him quite seriously and I simply wished him to have the 7 million as I really wouldn't know what to do with all that much money and he really deserved it 'cuz he's so kind to go to the trouble to bring it to my attention. Have fun with them.

Tell him to send the one million dollars to the Providence Hospital in Washington, DC, where your niece must have an heart operation that will cost $847,000.00. She is being left to die there except for this unbelievable evidence of God's wonderful providence. Isn't it something that she is in the ICU of Providence Hospital when this providential email arrives! Please use the 7 million for whatever you want, as all I want is to see my smiling niece's face again. Thank you for your letter and please use the rest of the money however you wish. I am the happiest man on earth! Thank you again.

Nigerian official: greedy marks as guilty as 419 scammers
By Jacqui Cheng | Published: August 22, 2008 - 10:40AM CT

People who fall for so-called "Nigerian scams" aren't victims at all—in fact, they're greedy and should be jailed, according to Nigerian high commissioner Sunday Olu Agbi. He said today that Nigeria has gained a bad reputation because of the scams perpetrated by a minuscule number of people, and that those who find themselves involved with the scams are equally as guilty as those running them.

"The Nigerian Government frowns very seriously on these scams... and every day tries to track down those who are involved," Olu Agbi told the Sydney Morning Herald in response to a previous article on Australians falling for Nigerian scams. "People who send their money are as guilty as those who are asking them to send the money."

Out of the 140 million people in Nigeria, Olu Agbi said that fewer than 0.1 percent were involved in Nigerian scams. The scams, also referred to as 419 scams or advance-fee fraud, predate the Internet, but have exploded in recent years thanks to the proliferation of e-mail and instant money transfers. Although the scams can take on many forms—from payments for products sold on eBay or Craigslist, to deposits on houses and purchases of plane tickets for "true love" on the other side of the ocean—they all follow the same general theme. .........
