Default Comps in 'Hard Eight'

There's a movie called 'Hard Eight' and in the beginning they show a little scam they do to get some comps. The protagonist John goes to the pit poss or floor person or something and says he has a problem gambling so he needs a 'rate card' so he can measure how much he spends. The guy gives him the card, and then John goes to some guy who changes cash to chips, he changes 150$, and gives him the rate card so it can record that. Then he plays the slots, slowly (20$ over 1 hour). Then he goes to another person who changes chips back to cash. He then takes the cash and goes to the other person who changes cash to chips and records it on his rate card. He's only spent 20$ but has 280$ on his rate card (150 plus 130). He keeps doing this and racks up a lot, and the floor manager or pit boss, whatever, thinks he's spent a lot. So they give him a free room and a meal. Does that work?

No, just another example of filmmakers not asking someone how it really works. In this movie Gwenth Paltrow thinks the way to play a prostitute is make yourself look as awful as possible.
