Default The Last Paradise

Lord Howe Island
The Last Paradise

Celebrating 25 years of World Heritage listing in December 2007
LORD HOWE ISLAND

Lord Howe island and Eastern Australia

Lord Howe Island — widely regarded as the most beautiful island in the Pacific — is the closest island getaway to Sydney. It’s less than two hours flying from either Sydney or Brisbane off Australia's east coast. It is one of just four island groups to be inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage list for the global significance of its natural beauty and heritage.

It’s a timeless natural paradise, where the pace is relaxed but where there are plenty of activities and adventures to choose from. Unspoiled, uncrowded beaches — with perfect golden sands — entice surfers, swimmers and sybarites.

The crystal lagoon is bordered by the world’s most southerly coral reef. Just wander in off the beach to snorkel among colourful tropical and sub-tropical fish, turtles and other marine life. Or head further off-shore to SCUBA dive on world-class sites. The water is so clean and clear, it’s like swimming in an aquarium.

Families love the safety and variety of kids’ activities; lovers find romance in the island’s secluded corners, natural beauty, luxury lodges and fine dining establishments.

For adventurers, there are bushwalks and more strenuous hikes, including Mt Gower, rated as one of the world’s best day walks. And to ease tired muscles, there is a choice of spa treatments.

To set foot on Lord Howe Island is to escape to a pristine environment, where you'll be met with friendly hospitality and the kind of holiday experience that you'll never want to leave.

There is a permanent population of 350. No more than 400 visitors are allowed at any one time. Mobile phones were voted banned. there are no high-rise buildings. The island is 11km long.

No, but after skinning the mainland casinos for 3 weeks solid, what better place to relax and recharge than this magic place for a few days...

I have a theory. It wasn't an apple. Eve was playing blackjack at a local Garden casino when this guy, zdevilg, came up to her. "Hey, wanna learn a way to beat God's Garden Gamblinghouse? I'll teach you how to count cards and you'll beat this control freak who has everything fixed in His favor. No more praying for food. You'll win enough to clothe and feed yourselves. You don't need God. You'll be independently wealthy!"

So Eve took the bait and she learned the Revere Count and soon was winning at GGG. There were ups and down (the knowledge of good and evil), but in the long run she seemed to always win. So she went and told Adam and he too learned to count. And soon they were both winning GaZillions of chips and paying their own way. The first thing they did was to buy clothes with lots of pockets so they could rathole chips.

So God was walking in the Garden and he saw that Adam and Eve, dressed to the nines, with pockets full of chips that they had ratholed. So God asked, "Adam, who taught you two to clothe yourselves and hide chips in your pockets?" They confessed that zdevilg had taught them how to count cards. So God said, "I have no choice but to put you on ZGrif's list and to bar you from the Garden. From now on you will have to work for a living by the sweat of your brow."

So Adam and Eve left the Garden that fateful day and they both went out and got jobs. Later, God sent His Son to tell Adam's heirs that if they had faith He would resume feeding them and when they died they could come back to the Garden.

To this day, men and women still wear clothes, but few realize where this custom began long ago in ancient times when Adam and Eve discovered the need for pockets. They are also credited with starting the world's first monetary system.
