Restrictions on internet gambling in Europe?

I live in the UK may take it for granted that Brits can bet and gamble with whatever operator/company we like.

I was talking to some colleagues from europe this week and apparently some of them could only bet with a restricted set of companies - even when online. At the end of the day this means poor value odds and less winnings for players.

I know this is sports betting rather than gaming, but here's a worked example from the recent Inter/Juventus soccer match. There's a 3.80 difference in profits from a 10 Euro bet:
