Something good came out of splitting tens

Count was +5, dealer had a 6 and I had two tens. I split 'em to the dismay of the other players. I got another ten and they asked if I would split them again. I split the tens again! I got a 3, a 7, and a deuce on each of my tens. The pit boss was watching. The dealer had a 5 in the hole and then drew an ace and a queen to bust! If I didn't split the tens the dealer would have had a 21. If I didn't resplit the tens I would have pushed as the dealer would have had 18. I was betting $75 for a total of $225 so I was a bit nervous. The pit boss told me that he would send a limo to my house anytime I wanted to play at that casino (I don't think he was serious). So now they think I'm an idiot, or so I hope.

Just goes to show that splitting tens equally helps and hurts the table. Splitting tens is my favorite index play, I wish I could do it more often.

At a $75 bet I don't think you have anything to worry about. But if you're betting several hundred, I think Ian Anderson's comment re: ten splitting has some merit. I'm paraphrasing, but it was something along the lines of "When you split tens, you're either very sharp or a complete moron, and it won't take the casino long to figure out which."

I was playing alone (with my AP friend watching me) and since I was using his money (he lets me play with his bank sometimes, he's rich) I could bet big ($200 max). I had a pair of tens against the dealers 4, and it was roughly true 8 at that point. Had $200 on the table and split them, got an ace on the first one and to my surprise got another ace on the second. The dealer drew a 9 for 13 and I called out "come on 7!" and to my disbelief the dealer pulls a 7 for 20 and I win both bets. I was shitting my pants after that hand.

It must be a cultural thing, but in australia it is standard practice to split 10's by anyone who wants to show that they are 'out for a good time' and not to win money. I don't think i have had a single session where at least one person was not splitting tens.
