Default Number of players at a table

I am completely new to the game of blackjack, I understand BS for single deck games, thats about it. Bear with me as I may ask some pretty rediculous questions. When there are multiple players at a table is each player playing against the dealer or are you playing against eachother as well?

Hyland...In normal casino blackjack, players are playing against the casino (or the dealer if you prefer.) However, you may have seen Blackjack televised on The Travel Channel. That was not normal casino Blackjack. It was a Blackjack Tournament. In tournaments the players are indeed playing against each other to determine who at the table will advance to the next round. Tournaments are a completely different game than playing for cash at a casino table.
