Iraq Says It Backs Iran's Right to Nuclear Program
by Andrew Buncombe
Iraq supports Iran's right to use nuclear technology for peaceful means and wants a diplomatic solution to the standoff between the Islamic Republic and the U.S. over uranium enrichment, the Iraqi foreign minister said.
``In our view the Islamic Republic has the right to have nuclear technology as long as it is for peaceful means,'' Hoshyar Zebari said today in a press conference from Baghdad broadcast live by Dubai, United Arab Emirates-based al-Arabiya television station.
Zebari was speaking after meeting Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki, who ruled out holding direct talks with the U.S. to resolve the standoff over the Iranian uranium enrichment program.
U.S. President George W. Bush and U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair, supporters of the new Iraqi government, are at the forefront of western criticism of Iran's nuclear program which they suspect may be cover for the development of nuclear weapons.
Iran is under increasing pressure from the U.S. and Europe to abandon its nuclear program, which the Islamic Republic says is aimed at producing electricity and isn't a cover for developing an atomic bomb..
The United Nations Security Council's five permanent members plus Germany met in London on May 24 to discuss incentives offered by France, the U.K. and Germany to encourage Iran to stop enriching uranium.
Mottaki's Concerns
Mottaki expressed concern over Iran's security because of the presence of U.S.-led troops in Iraq, where some 130,000 American troops are deployed as part of a coalition that numbers about 150,000.
This is the highest-level visit by an Iranian official to Iraq since Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won Iran's elections in June last year, Agence France-Presse reported. Mottaki's visit follows the promotion of Iranian charge d'affairs, Hassan Kazemi Qomi, in Baghdad to an ambassador, the first between the two countries since the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war. The war left more than 1 million dead.
Mottaki said Iran is keen to see the new Iraqi government of Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki succeed. On May 20, Al-Maliki won parliamentary approval for his new cross-party cabinet.

"Iraq supports Iran's right to use nuclear technology for peaceful means..."
I don't think letting other countries get nuclear technology will make the world any more peaceful.

Iran was already a signatory tho the Non-Proliferation Treaty, unlike say India and Brazil. Iran has every concievable right to nuclear energy. And now the "new democratic" Iraq agrees. zg

Let's hear your argument that shows Iran has "every conceivable right to nuclear energy". Try to come up with a valid argument that commits no fallacies!

Simple - Iran voluntarily became a signatory to the UN non-proliferation treaty YEARS AGO which by its intent allows signing countries to develop much-needed nuclear energy systems.
The big LIE/PROPAGANDA that has been planted in the minds of Americans by the Neocons and their corporate-owned media lapdogs is that Iran is somehow about to have nuclear weapons capability.
India, Pakistan, Brazil, AND ISRAEL have both nuclear energy AND weaponry capabilties and have NOT signed the non-proliferation treaty.
You better start getting your information from more than just the propaganda mills! zg

It just doesn't seem like anyone has a right to nuclear weapons. I don't think weapons build-ups from every country will help "keep the peace".

I agree, but on the subject is nuclear "energy" - Iraq, like any other signer of the UN non-proliferation treaty has a right to develop nuclear energy systems. The Bush neocon administration has been pushing the same false agenda that got us into the illegal Irag invation. zg

it sounds like you guys are going a little deeper into this article than was intended.. its not a philosophical debate its a political one.. nuclear weapons are made with uranium the same stuff used to power nuclear power plants which are peaceful. diplomatically speaking its cool for a country to buy all the uranium they want because it takes a shitload to power the plants.. but when someone like sadaam husien starts ordering a bunch of uranium thats a different story!! we all know where thats going!!!
since you are getting all philosophical though i am interested to see what philosophy you guys agree with.. I agree most with Hobbes who, simply put, says might makes right, which would explain why sadam ruled the way he did and why we had the right to invade his country. He was being foolish to think that we didnt have the "might" to do so..

What the F**K are you talking about - no Niger yellowcake, no WMD, no lawful reason to invade and precipitate the death of a quarter-million civilians and children - just oil, greed, conquest, power, and a lame attempt to save a bunch of evil corrupt central banks and a bankrupt economic system. zg
