Playboy to open casino in Cancun

Fox News | December 02, 2010 (Archive copy)

Mexico City – Playboy said its $7.5 million casino in the Mexican Caribbean resort city of Cancun would open this weekend.

The casion, which covers 1,200 sq. meters (12,900 sq. feet) will be inaugurated Saturday with a private party and open to the public the next day.

The casino will offer gaming tables and machines to play roulette, poker, Caribbean poker and blackjack.

A betting parlor will offer sports fans the opportunity to make wagers on American football, soccer, baseball and basketball games, as well as on major international sporting events.

Playboy Cancun selected 25 young women out of 1,500 who applied to be bunnies at the casino.

Archon Design provided design services for the casino, combining "tasteful details emblematic of Playboy and new aspects. A replica of the chimney from the Playboy Mansion sits at the entrance with a painting of founder Hugh Hefner over it," the company said.

The company will continue its long tradition of charitable giving at the Playboy Cancun casino, raising funds for local non-governmental organizations.

The Red Cross will be the first NGO to be provided with funds, Playboy said.

The first phase of the project is expected to create 255 direct jobs and 650 indirect jobs in construction.

You must be a "member" to enter. To become a member, you must pay $20. They then give you a card. They do not ask for ID or take down any personal information, they just give you a card which I believe is numbered. It was my impression that once you purchase this card, you are set and can enter no-charge on any future visits provided you bring the card. This card must be presented to purchase chips.

There were 6 blackjack tables ( I think 6, maybe 8.) Minimum bet was 100 pesos. I am not sure what the maximum was at my table. They had 2 "high stakes" tables that were not open with minimums of 300, maximum 10,000 (approx 12 pesos = $1.) At my table the highest denom chip was 500. I saw 1000 peso chips at the "high stakes" table. I believe that is the highest chip they have, or at least normally keep in the racks.

I only played 2 shoes, so I am not completely sure on all of the rules. Pen was poor, probably 65%. H17, 6 deck, DAS, surrender available except when dealer shows A. I did notice an opening for an advanced method. PM for details.

Bunnies were around, but they were not dealers. Beers were about $4. Not worth a trip.

How was security? (Place seems like it'd make a nice target.)

Security/Safety

I felt very safe there. So did my wife, which says a lot as she tends to worry. It is in a nice part of the city, near expensive hotels. When you arrive there are lots of staff members around the taxi stand. I would say it is in a safe part of a safe city.
