Ignorance is bliss

I had an interesting discussion with an employee of mine over the weekend. After a long night of drinking, i somehow found myself in a discussion of card counting and jackpots. My employee, (we'll call him Bob) says to me, "i want to learn how to count cards, but its illegal and they will take me into the backroom and beat the s*** outt a me". I immediately respond with "its not illegal, just an unwanted practice, and they wont beat you up because its all corporate now". Now in defense mode he explains how back in the 70s his friend was "counting" and got the classic back room. I tried explaining that it wasnt the same as now, not by a long shot. Then he asks how i would know how it is now. I contemplated for a moment on telling him that I know because i'm an AP, at that point my father chimes in and tells him for me. Bob's bewildered at this point and asks if I have ever been back roomed, I responded no, but dont plan on it any time soon. Even after everything was said and explained, he then goes to tell me that there is no way to win in casinos because everything is rigged. I tried to explain that they dont need to rig it due to their natural house advantage over the game and would not believe one word i said.
It just goes to show, no matter how much evidence and math to back something up, the true gambler will never believe a word you say.
Thanks for reading this, there aren't many people that I can tell this too that can relate.

No it wasnt that much, it was "yea, my son counts cards" thats as much as was told. The thing about him being an employee is that he is also a long time friend of my dad. We gave him a job becuase he was laid off his last one.

I normally dont go farther than that, this particular time knowing hes not any threat to my playing security or even at work. I had to at least try to explain it, because I thought I may be able to get him to understand. Maybe he couldn't because of all the Jack Daniels haha.

I always find it interesting what the ploppies believe. My father in law is typical. He is convinced they are always reprogramming the slot machines to pad their margins.

Like they really need to do that! I don't even go there with him.

I have talked with casino employess who believe they "tighten up" the machines on weekends and holidays to make a big kill. In fact, this is a widespread ploppy assumption, at leat, the tightening up part. Personally, I do not think they change a machine to make it tighter or looser once they deploy it on the floor. The chip that is used to control payouts via a random number generator is on file with the gaming commission. I would be stunned to find they had more than one chip on file with the commission for the same machine. The machines are so stacked against your winning in the first place, I don't know what would be gained making them even worse from time to time. For sure, they do "fish" you, but that is all taken care of by the factory programming of each of their machines.

Yeah, Gimmie a break... Like something with a 10% house edge needs to be tightened up. It's amazing that people can ever win at those even with the massive variance

There's a reason the most comps and most hosts are dedicated to slot suckers. Guess where the host desk is in the borgata? The high limit slot area. Those slots have a house edge of "only" 5-6%. With a 2 credit $100 machine you can lose 10 bucks every few seconds, whoo hoo!

I wish they would outlaw slots. More table games to exploit that way
