Default What to expect downtown?

I will be in Las vegas july5th-8th staying at the Golden Nugget. I've never been downtown just wondering how the atmosphere differs from that on the strip. I've just read things liek it's different? What does that mean? Is it pretty ghetto or what? I personally dont care, but my GF is concerned.

It tends to draw an older crowd.Fremont St itself is pretty nice, but within a few hundred yards in most directions ,it gets pretty raw. Most tourists don't go off the Fremont-Ogden corridor.Fair amount of pan-handlers,and a few knucke-heads.
But,casinos are literally yards apart. You can switch casinos in under a minute.
Light show is a must see and theres a watered down version of Hogs and Heifers.
I prefer downtown to the strip.Only problem is that if its youir GFs first trip to Vegas, she should see the whole Venitian,Palace-Sirens,volcano **** and its a distance from the Nugget.

What is the best way to get to the strip from downtown? I plan on going there a few times

Nothing wrong with downtown - you must remind yourself that you are there for BJ. Go to GN entrance and step into a Taxi. zg

You can take double deck bus but its often very crowded and takes forever.
Taxis are more convienant but run about $35-40 roundtrip.Maybe going one way in each would work. Taxis usually don't take the strip route,so the bus will let you see the various spots. I'd take a bus there, get off around Mirage, thats close to the epicenter of mid-strip.Then take a taxi home. Buses and taxis are pretty tough to get on Fremont at nite until about 30 minutes after the light show.

Bus runs every 10 minutes at LV Blved & Fremont, and taxis are always available at GN regardless of light show. Time = money - if you are playing in the hours, and your EV is $40/hr the $2.00 30 min bus ride (with 20 min walking and waiting) will cost you $36.

The $17 10 min taxi ride (with no walking and waiting) is cheaper. zg

My wife and I have done both....Bus and Cab. Cab is better. The bus, during the noontime return trip took an hour and it was hotter 'n Hell!

One other option might be to check the "shuttles" at California Club. They may have one that runs to Barbary Coast. Or you might take the shuttle to Sam's Town and might be able to connect to the Strip from there.

Downtown.....My wife LOVES it! She even goes with me to the Tez during the day.
