Almost feel guilty

On a recent weekend get away...I played BJ just for fun. Not a good game...but the only one in the area...and not much else around for entertainment.

So...played red chips and didn't worry about counting. The casino was really small ....only 1 BJ and 1 S21 table with a few players at each.

It appeared that most people at casino were local retired folks....most betting table min if $3:)

When I heard an announcement that the first player from BJ or s21 to get a suited 20 or BJ would get $50....I went from 1 hand to 2. As hoped....I got a suited 20 less than a minute later.

The 85 yr old man sitting next to me was almost as happy for me as I was.....

Might be the first time I've ever felt a twinge of guilt while playing BJ.

Never feel guilty. If that old man would have won it instead of you, there's a 95% chance that he would have lost it back to the casino at the same table that day.

Mica, I totally understand what you are feeling but...either them or you get the money and money is what it's all about! Sounds like you are doing very well for yourself...keep up the great work!

Just to make sure I understand, you felt guilty because you played like a (educated) ploppy? zg

Bad habit

I have a bad habit if making friends quickly. Seriously...I'm the woman at the table that everyone ..(occasionally even a dealer) confides in!Appearing to be actively listening while keeping the count is prob my biggest challenge. I am definitely a people person....and sometimes that means caring about another player enough that I hope they win! In this case....winning that $50 promo might have been the highlight of my 80+ yr old's week .

Remember that I'm a newbie! Ill
Prob be as jaded as the rest of u in due time!

I too wish for other people to be successful. But I have a family that depends upon me for economic support. If I actually wanted strangers to be more successful than MYSELF; well, now..... THAT would be JADED!

As a rule you do not want to make friends at a casino, other than AP's.

We are your only peers in that building, and the only ones you can trust.

Went a little out of my way to play at a casino that was offering prizes, rather than go to my usual casino that was not offering any.

Sat down, and not 5 minutes later, I hear my name on the PA system, calling me down to collect my prize :) Wasn't too much, but not bad, about 1/3 of my "expected" EV value for the session.

Should I start feeling guilty that I took a prize from some poor theoretical ploppy? Hardly. He he I was probably the only person in that building who didn't really "need it" :)

Empathy, one of mankind's greatest attributes

Mica, I know what you are feeling. I am a very empathetic person, often feeling the pain of others more severely than my own. When someone tries to pick a fight with me I always try my best to avoid it. I am a broad shouldered and very powerful individual. I can severely injure somebody without really trying. It is pretty easy to keep from being hit if you only use defensive moves and I hardly feel my own pain anyway. If they won't stop within a minute or so it is over quickly and I really try hard not to hurt them to bad. Fortunately most people stop before then, finding it shameful to fight someone who isn't trying to strike back. I doubt they know how lucky they are that they at least have some moral code. I doubt you will lose your strong sense of empathy. It is hard wired into the people that have it. Others who don't have it just don't understand what it is like to feel so strongly another person's point of view. It is impossible for a small minority of people to even try to put themselves in someone else's shoes. We are the small minority on the other end of the spectrum.

I feel...

I get a warm, fuzzy feeling for every dollar I whack the casinos for. They are ruthless scum with it in mind to fleece all they can out of WHOEVER they can. If you dig deep enough and find out what casino managers and casino hierarchy think and say confidentially you might be startled. To be absolutely pissed off that you only raked up 7 out of every 10 dollars that bought chips that day instead of REALLY slamming them for 9 out of every 10 dollars that bought chips? To dream up ways to gouge out more and clean out the customers FASTER as you go? Nope--- I don't feel bad at all. As far as the old guy next to you? He would have only squandered the money on super stinky cigars ar handed it back to them anyway...

If I could get away with it, not only would I whack them for every dollar I can but would also bring along broad-shouldered Tthree to beat them around a bit (which I could do myself if not for the risk of breaking a nail since I often dress in drag, looking a lot like Joan Rivers when I play so such behavior on my part would not only qualify as unbecoming but also risk knocking my wig out of place or breaking a nail).

Smart AND funny group

I never know what I'll find on this site...but it's almost guaranteed to be interesting!

Thanks for the insightful responses to my post!

AM-no worries....people/dealers I play with consider me friendly/a friend....but the feeling is not mutual...just part of my cover :)

Three- happy to know there are others w empathy and know I might be able to retain mine!...btw...don't know that I'm as saint like as u....I never pick a fight...but not defending myself would be difficult...fortunately...prob cuz I'm female...I've never been hit...but certainly cursed at...most recently by an A hole when I hit a 13 v dealers 3 on a - count....

Red and others-yes...I'm there to get money...I have no guilt at all about taking $$ from casinos...will work on not feeling guilty about me getting a promo over an elderly regular who needs it more than me.

Thx to all!

sorry, but i don't follow this...why the guilt??? winning a promo?..couldn't be that the old guy next to you would've gotten it unless when you went to one more hand, he went to one less

I am no saint. You want a quick response from me mess with someone with me that can't adequately fend for themselves. I don't have the same standard of restraint in that situation.

I don't know. You guys seem to be a little too emotional about this issue. The casino industry is a predatory industry, just like the tobacco and alcohol industries and many others both legal and not. But that is the world we live in.

I take great pride in being able to beat this industry to the point that I can make a modest living, but I don't feel any extra special joy because I am revenging those less fortunate. As a matter of fact, those folks and the decisions they make, are what makes it possible for me to acheive my objectives, so it would be hypocritical for me to even feel bad for them. Sounds cold, but that's the facts.

What I do find disturbing is the image in my head from the second part of Tarzan's post.

I know Tarzan. He probably doesn't need my help but if need be I got his back. I am sure he is more than a handful in a fight and would surprise anyone who thought otherwise. He would also make short work of his opponent in a confrontation. I would definitely not want to mess with him.

I was simply referring to the Tarzan in Drag, looking like Joan Rivers as the disturbing image stuck in my head.
