Sluggishness

Ever since Friday, a week ago, page to page response on this forum has beem incredibly slow. And it's only here. Even Ken's other forum is normal.
I wonder if any other members have noticed this.

fredperson, It appears you are accessing the site over AOL, so I can't really see all your actual browser requests to troubleshoot. (AOL caches a lot of content, and asks for content over several different IP addresses.)

If your browser cache is not setup correctly, you might be requesting all the scripts for the new chatbar over and over with each page load.

Idea 1: Clear your browser cache and try again.
Idea 2: Try a different browser if you are using the notoriously flaky AOL-provided one.

My new recommendation is no longer Firefox, but instead Google's Chrome.

Final possibility: I've been the cause of site slowness on a few occasions while I've been installing updated software and the like. This is the least likely cause though, as those incidents have been short-lived.

Personally, I'm still primarily using Firefox, because of the tremendous value in some extensions that I use. WebDeveloper is a must-have for example. I haven't looked to see if it exists for Chrome yet.

My recommendation for Chrome is primarily because of the Chrome emphasis on security and auto-updating. The typical user doesn't realize the importance of installing the never-ending stream of updates. Chrome just does it, period.

I suspect that the new Firefox maintenance schedule will become similar to the Chrome model of frequent updates, but I'll wait to see for sure.

I've noticed a slight difference since the new chatbar went in.

If can take a noticable amount of time for all the elements of a page to load (e.g., after clicking on 'New Posts'), but I'm not sure that is any slower than before. It's generally of the order of a second or two. Blacjacktournaments.com does seem more instantaneous, but that may be because it has so much less traffic.

What is definitely new, however, is that the chatbar appears to be the last thing to load, and if I click on the menu bar 'Quick Links' option before this has completed, the menu either judders slowly into view, or fails to appear altogether, sometimes giving a 'null-object' type of javascript error.

(This is using IE8.)

Just wanted to point that that indeed using Google Chrome will dramatically speed up your experience surfing the webpages on this site. Chrome is much faster than Internet Explorer. I was pulling my hair out with how slow pages loaded on Internet Explorer. But that attests how good this website is - I kept coming back despite the sluggish interface on IE. Anyway, now I'm on Chrome, and much happier.
