If the dealer gets a blackjack and you split a few times (where I play you can split as many times as possible; except for Aces) or you double you only lose your original bet. But of course, if you split and/or double and the dealer doesn't get a blackjack and still beats you, you lose everything. This happened a week ago where I play and that's what was explained to me (and that's how I understand it as).
