The article flatters him by calling him a con man. He's just an ordinary cheat. He didn't ply his trade living by his wits and preying on the larceny of his victims, but by recruiting inside men to participate in his technology-assisted cheating scheme.

With him sitting there repeating the cards into his sleeve all the time it's a wonder they didn't get caught much, much sooner.
