Default It's Like, Another Thread

Does anybody like, really hate this? Like, don't I sound like a moron? Like, good god don't you just want to, like, shoot me?

How long has this been going on? I'm saying at least fifteen years, afflicting those primarily between ages 8-35.

I catch myself doing it occasionally, but it's usually when I'm inebriated and when excited about whatever conspiracy/reality theory I'm discussing with my wife. Sometimes I use genuine similies using "like" and feel dirty. I'm convinced we have thoroughly bastardized the word.

There are two reasons why "like" appears effective to those who exploit it. First off, these people aren't even TRYING to express accurate thoughts. What does this mean, you ask? It means (at least to my outrage) that people aren't concerned with saying EXACTLY what they are saying, so they use the similie "like" to generalize their ideas. They throw the idea out there, and if you don't get it, then we'll just keep the dance going (again, filled with "likes").

The second reason is both arguable and relevant; it's a by-product of the first: by using the similie, the speaker doesn't commit to the ideas he presented. He says that it's "like" this, he doesn't say that is this; then he has an escape hatch in case the listener disagrees, and then the speaker can say, "Well, that's what I meant."

When my wife uses "like" unnecassarily, I usually say, "Is it --- or is it like ---?" Is there a way to stop this contagious abomination without being sarcastic?
