Basic Strategy Systems

Hi all, am a new user (and BJ player):

In studying the basic strategy, I have used Thorp's in "Beat the Dealer". However, I find different ones posted elsewhere, including on this site. Are these changes the result of more modern abilities to compute basic strategy, or what has been proven to work in actual human play? Does it really matter whose basic strategy is used. Although I don't mind learning different playing systems, I would like to learn only one "basic" system.

Differences are likely due to advances in computing methods since Thorp's day. The strategies provided by the Basic Strategy Engine on this site are mathematically optimal.

If you're not sure which rules to choose, I would recommend using 6 decks, Dealer Stands on all 17s (S17), Double any 2 cards, Double after split, No surrender.
That will provide a chart that is pretty accurate for any game.

(Note to the curious: These days there may well be more H17 than S17 games, but I think the errors introduced by always playing S17 strategy are less than if you always used an H17 strategy.)
