July 27, 2005 - No matter how prepared you are for the deluge of imagery created by the telling of what is perhaps the world's dirtiest joke (and soon to be one of its most famous as well), it's likely that something in The Aristocrats will either shock or offend you. The Aristocrats is a documentary that explores the rich and sometimes disgusting history of a joke told by comedians to comedians, usually backstage as an initiation into the comic world.

A collection of several dozen tellings of the same joke, and comic commentary of what it all means, The Aristocrats succeeds on many levels. It is hilarious, jarring, shocking, divisive and confrontational. It demands that viewers think about what is appropriate in comedy ("everything" seems to be the universal answer, as long as it's funny), it forces thought about free speech and the nature of language, and it showcases some of the more memorable transformations of perception in recent memory. For instance, some of the filthiest offerings come from Bob Saget and Carrie Fisher.
