meningitis
What do you think Zengrifter?
Is meningitis for real or for fake?
To get vaccinated or to not get vaccinated?
People are pressuring me into getting a shot. Are they looking out for my best interests or are they just trying to make some money ($90/shot)?

Is that because this is your first year in your dorm? I've heard you should get one in your first year in the dorm since it is prevalent in college dorms. This is just what I have heard, I don't know if the source was reliable or not.
But I havn't gotten my shot and I don't plan on it, but I don't live in the dorms...

I have an idea. Calculate your chance of getting meningitis, then calculate how much getting it will cost you. Multiply the chance of getting it by the cost of getting it, and see if the number is less than or greater than 90 dollars. If it is less, don't get the shot, if it is more then go for it.
It's basically like finding out if the 90 dollar shot is +EV or not.

Vaccines and natural health
Mothering, Spring, 1994 by Neil Z. Miller
Today, many vaccines are in use. Several more are in various stages of development. A number of vaccines that are routinely given in infancy and childhood are promoted as safe and effective. Scientific findings, however, dispute these claims.
The idea of vaccinating children to prevent disease dates back to 1796. In that year, an English doctor named Edward Jenner observed that dairymaids who had caught cowpox (a minor disease) could not catch smallpox (a fatal disease). To test his theory, Jenner inserted diseased matter from the hand of Sarah Nelmes, a local dairymaid who had become infected with cowpox, into the cut arm of James Phipps, a healthy eight-year-old boy. The boy caught cowpox. Forty-eight days later, Jenner injected smallpox matter into the boy. It had no effect. This was the first recorded vaccination. Today, many vaccines are in use. Several more are in various stages of development. A number of vaccines that are routinely given in infancy and childhood are promoted as safe and effective. Scientific findings, however, dispute these claims.

Well it looks like as a freshmen I have a 4 in 100,000 chance of getting it and one out of 10 people that get it die so I have about a (4/100,000)/10, or a 1 out of 250,000 chance of dying. I estimate my life is worth $1,000,000 so $1,000,000(1/250,000) = $4. So it looks like the meningitis shot is only worth $4. I guess it is a negative EV play?

That, of course, doesn't take into account the variance. BUT, in general, think of vaccines as BAD MEDICINE! zg

First year in the dorms? Maybe you should be more worried about herpes medications. I think like 1 in 3 college girls have that.

Yeah, you MIGHT want to use a RISK AVERSE calculation here!

Vaccine Dangers and Vested Interests
A retired vaccine researcher goes public on what the pharmaceutical industry and the health authorities don't want us to know: that vaccines are unsafe, untested and one of the greatest frauds of our time.
