GEORGE BUSH was hosting the incoming House of Representatives speaker, Nancy Pelosi, at her first White House lunch as the Republicans finally conceded defeat in Virginia.
With the formal concession by George Allen, once a favourite for the Republican nomination for the 2008 presidential election, the Democrats' control of both houses of Congress became official.
The juxtaposition of Ms Pelosi's lunch with Senator Allen's political demise mirrored what this election meant for the winners and the losers.
The Democrats will have at least a 30-seat majority in the House and a two-seat majority in the Senate. When the new Congress meets for the first time in early January Ms Pelosi, the first woman speaker, will become third in line for the presidency. She would take over if President Bush and the Vice-President, Dick Cheney, were incapacitated.
