Default Name the mystery count

My stepmother handed me a novel she was reading (basically a chick book). There was a section in it, about 5 pages, where one character was describing a card-counting escapade at a casino, and even broke down the basics of how it works.

The unnamed system counted 3-8, and 10s. It did not reckon 2s, 9s, or aces. There was no mention of an ace side count.

This didn't seem right. Would this correspond to any sort of system, with or without an ace side count?

It’s a little close to the Canfield Expert (3-7 = +1, 9-10 = -1) or the Uston Advanced Plus-Minus (3-7 = +1, 10-A = -1), but not quite. According to the Efficiency Calculator on Norm’s CVData (Oh No! Does that make me a “huckster” too?! ) the numbers for the “Mystery Count” are:

(A,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,X)
(0,0,1,1,1,1,1,1,0,-1)
BC: .837
PE: .621
IC: .877

It improves slightly with a little tweak
(A,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,X)
(0,0,1,2,2,1,1,1,0,-2)
BC: .868
PE: .660
IC: .909

The BC jumps up to around .94 if you include an ace side count of -2. It's not bad, but it ain't great. Maybe those chicks shoud do a little research before they write their novels.

Wow, I'm surprised that it would work at all without reckoning aces somehow, thanks Sonny.

The only count I know the gives a value to 8 is Uston APC, which also did not reckon aces but it does reckon both 2 and 9.

And you know, I can't guarantee that nines weren't reckoned in the book, so maybe that's it.
