Its not really him - see http://www.blackjackinfo.com/bb/showthread.php?t=3812)

SNAPSHOT - Saddam Hussein executed
30 Dec 2006 19:41:04 GMT
Source: Reuters

* Saddam Hussein was hanged at dawn on Saturday in Baghdad for crimes against humanity, a dramatic, violent end for a leader who ruled Iraq by fear for three decades before he was toppled by a U.S. invasion in 2003.

* Saddam's body was flown on board a U.S. plane to his family hometown of Tikrit after it was handed over to tribal leaders for burial, possibly by Sunday.

* "Saddam's execution puts an end to all the pathetic gambles on a return to dictatorship," said Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, who signed the order for the hanging.

* U.S. President George W. Bush hailed a milestone for Iraqi democracy.

* The European Union, which opposes capital punishment, condemned the execution, with one official calling it a barbaric act that could create an undeserved martyr.

* Libya declared three days of mourning and cancelled public Eid holiday celebrations. Flags flew at half-mast.

* Saddam's Baath Party exhorted Iraqis to "strike without mercy" at the U.S. occupiers and Shi'ite Iran to avenge his execution.

* Egypt's Foreign Ministry expresses regret that authorities in Iraq went ahead with the execution, and for carrying it out on the first day of the Eid al-Adha feast.

* At least 72 people are killed in a series of bomb attacks following Saddam's execution.

* December became the deadliest month for U.S. troops in Iraq in two years. The U.S. military reported six more combat deaths raising the Dec death toll to 109.

* Pilgrims in Mecca expressed outrage that Iraqi authorities chose to execute Saddam on a major religious holiday.

* Shi'ite Muslims, oppressed under Saddam, celebrated.

* A curfew was imposed in Tikrit, Saddam's hometown, where there were reports of sporadic clashes. Residents in Awja, the impoverished village where he was born, said Saddam was now a martyr in the fight against the U.S.-backed government.

* State television aired film of Saddam, looking composed, as a masked hangman placed a noose around his neck on the indoor gallows. One channel later showed his body in a white shroud.

* "They left him hanging for around 10 minutes before a doctor confirmed his death and they untied him and placed him in a white bodybag," said witness Sami al-Askari.

* The former president will probably be buried secretly in Iraq after the government rejected a request to give the family the body, said Askari, an aide to Maliki.

I always get a kick out of this one when events are planned around Muslim holidays, as not to "offend." Did they forget the Yom Kippur war?

Pot, kettle, black.

Has anyone seen the video of the hanging?
...or know where to find it on the net?

In this case, its one sect of Islam offending the majority sect. Saddam himself used to pardon folks on this Holy Day.With hundreds of thousands of Muslims gathering in Mecca,it does seem like a very untimely execution.

They scheduled his execution to be before Eid, not on Eid nor during the Haj, although realistically most people begin traveling for the Haj before it officially starts. The intent was to prevent the execution from interfering with their religious observances. But if someone was a Saddam supporter, they're going to claim offense that the execution was on Eid, a day before Eid, 127 days after Eid, etc.

When his sons Uday and Qusay were killed, what they found in their possession showed just what kind of holy men they were: heroin, phone numbers of European prostitutes, and US currency. Those are what that class of people really worship.

I don't recall anyone ever saying Hussien and his family were religious at all.
His vision was for a Pan-Arabian unification, not an Islamic one.Thats why any talk of a Batthist-Al Queda link is spurious.
The timing of his execution would be like someone being executed on Christmas Eve,to avoid killing him on Christmas Day.Add to it the difference in timezones, and the result is not going to be pretty
