Question about chip-tracking

Does anyone know how chip-tracking works? I assume its simple and the device in the chip sends a signal and the device in the table picks it up. Does anyone know the nature of this exchange between the two? Is it magnetic, electronic, etc.?
What is its range? Would it negate the benefits of ratholing if the chips in my purse were too close to the sensor? How sensitive is the sensor in the table?

Do Las Vegas casinos do this too? If so, which ones?

i don't know specifics, but in all liklihood it is based on RFID technology. which can have a long reach, but and this is just speculation, the range has to be very short for this application otherwise each sensor would be picking up chip info from adjacent locations. i would think it would be a matter of inches, not feet - though with the right device you can swipe prius owner's RFID info off their fobs from 20', then go to their car and start it
