Bang for your buck in 'Die Hard' 4.0

Julian Satterthwaite / Daily Yomiuri Staff Writer
Live Free or Die Hard (Japan title: Die Hard 4.0)
three stars out of five
Dir: Len Wiseman
Cast: Bruce Willis, Justin Long, Maggie Q, Timothy Olyphant, Cliff Curtis

There has been a lot of talk this year of "threequels," with third helpings of spiders, pirates, oceans and ogres all on offer at the cinema. But there's also a "fourquel" out there in the shape of a new Die Hard movie. The question is whether this long-dormant franchise has been revived for anything other than commercial reasons.

Live Free or Die Hard sees Bruce Willis reprise the role of John McClane--a weary New York City cop who just can't help being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Long before Kiefer Sutherland started having the longest days of his life, McClane was doing regular battle with superterrorists and megacriminals.

But it's the age of the series that raises the first and most inevitable question: Is Willis still up to playing action hero? The first Die Hard came out in 1988, and Willis is now a not so youthful 52. Can he still hack it?
On this score at least, the answer is a pretty solid "yes." ...

Living Free: Not an Option in Europe?

From the desk of Luc Van Braekel on Mon, 2007-06-18 22:29

The fourth "Die Hard" movie starring Bruce Willis is to be released in the U.S. next week,
and one week later in Europe. We managed to collect the movie posters as they will be
shown in the U.S. (left) and in Europe (right). Spot the differences.

Yes indeed, two different titles for the same movie! I guess the "live free" part of
the title was considered to be too sensitive outside of North America? I know that
"Live free or die" is the state motto of New Hampshire, but that is hardly an excuse.
A second difference is that The Statue of Freedom in the background on top of the
U.S. Capitol is a lot closer to Willis' ear in the international version. Because the voice
of freedom is much more faint? (Hat tip: JamesH)
