Default Cheated at Argosy lawrenceburg,IN ?

Hello this is my first post on this forum.

I was at Argosy in Lawrenceburg this week playing blackjack and was getting some decisions that seemed questionable and was hoping some blackjack professionals could tell me whether this is the norm.

I was dealt 10-6 dealer had a 5 showing so i stood on that. Dealer turns over an ace so thats a soft 16. Dealer draws another ace says thats soft 17 takes my money. The way i always played and understood the game is when that 2nd ace is drawn that hand is no longer a soft hand its a hard hand, which in this case should have been a 7 and dealer should have proceeded to draw more cards.

If i'm wrong please enlighten me, thank you.

btw...this happened numerous times while i was there along with some other questionable things like not letting me hit on split aces and such which caused me to lose. I know you cant hit when you double down but if you split a hand your supposed to be able to hit that hand till your satisfied with your cards. At least thats the way i always understood it.

A soft hand is one where an ace is valued as 11, not 1. You could have a hand consisting of 5 aces, but it would still a soft 15.

As far as splitting aces, it is very common to not be able to draw on split aces. You split the aces and get 1 card for each ace. Also, if you're dealt a 10 on that ace, it counts as 21, not blackjack, so the payoff would only be 1:1 and not 3:2.

That was my first post in ages.

Yep, that hand would still be a a soft 17 where I'm used to playing, also. And as was probably printed on the felt at the table "dealer stands on all 17s". Despite your particular experience on that hand, a stand on soft 17 rule is slightly advantageous for the player.

Drawing more cards on split aces is also super-rare. If you're lucky, you might be able to resplit them if you draw more aces.

Default Cheating is a serious charge

Helix

Casinos are not always innocent, decisions made are also not always correct but in your case, as others explained, they did nothing wrong.
Concerning the dealer hand of A,A,5: In a game where the dealer stays on all 17's (a better game for the player), this hand is always a 17 for the dealer. If it had been a game where the dealer hits soft 17, the dealer would have had to hit again at least once and either achieve a hard 17, a higher total or a bust. The dealer has no options, the rules say what he must do.
You as a player do have options: If dealt the same A,A,5 you can stay (bad play) or hit.

When splitting aces there are very few casinos that will let you get additional cards. Some will let you re-split if another ace is hit, but nearly none will let you take an additional cards if you are not pleased by the card you received.

I can only suggest that you learn the basic rules of blackjack or in fact any other game you wish to risk your money on.

This thread is pissing me off.

Cheating IS a serious charge and if you are going to make it you should know what you are talking about.

If Argosy were cheating by...say stacking the deck you could make the case when their 6 deck shoe displays a 7th 5 of hearts.

But not knowing the difference between hard and soft hands is blackjack 101 and I second ihate17's remarks.

The only cheating going on here is you cheating yourself out of learning the game you are betting on.

Well, in fairness, he did put a question mark after it so I don't think he was accusing them of cheating.

I give him credit for wondering and then asking. Be nice to a first-time poster

I hope to hear many more questions from him as time goes by. One question leads to another and another. Eventually u learn a little more than u started with.

Although, I do agree with you, if u r going to accuse anyone of cheating hopefully you will have some evidence to present.

Doesn't seem to happen too often though lol.

Well...thank you for making me feel so welcome Prestonian. I asked a simple question, i did not make a statement. The rules vary just enough so that they can be confusing to someone who doesnt play 24/7 like myself and ive been in casinos where the rules were different than at argosy so thats why i was concerned about possible cheating on their part, especially since i had a big bet out when it happened.

The issue here isn't so much "cheating" per se. It's more a question of "does the casino consistently follow it's own house rules". I suppose you could call it cheating if a dealer stays on S17 when he has the table beat, and hits when he doesn't, but it would probably be dealer mistake if he told the player he couldn't hit on split aces in the rare house where you can hit aces.

The important thing here for any new player is that not all joints have the same rules, so find out what they are before you play (if nothing else, you can ask a dealer or pit critter), and make sure the dealers follow them.

Default IN Rules? Plugging Deck

Last summer I played a casino in IN. and the dealer did not plug discards. He simply put them all on top prior to shuffle. Is this a usual practice in IN?

Thanks,

jim
