$8.25 million answer to prayers

39-year-old poker player's $225 investment pays off

By HOWARD STUTZ

REVIEW-JOURNAL Jerry Yang is a different kind of World Series of Poker champion. Vastly different.

The diminutive 39-year-old psychologist, a Laotian immigrant, a married father of six small children and a born-again Christian from Temecula, Calif., honed his poker skills inside American Indian casinos around Riverside County. But he has played the game for only two years.

Jerry Yang celebrated winning the $10,000
No-Limit Texas Hold'em World Championship
on Wednesday in Las Vegas. He plans to
give 10 percent of his $8.25 million purse
to charity and wants to do missionary work.

Before entering the World Series of Poker, he had never set foot inside a Las Vegas casino's poker room. He won his entry into the $10,000 buy-in no-limit Texas Hold'em world championship event through a satellite tournament at his hometown Pechanga Casino. His total investment was $225.

Shortly before 4 a.m. Wednesday, Yang became the latest World Series of Poker champion, outlasting a field of 6,358 players over the 11-day event at the Rio and collecting a prize of $8.25 million.

Default he played well

and needless to say the luck factor was big for him . I would always prefer to be luckier then anything . If you ride the rushes you can come out a big winner if you know when to walk away . Self discipline is the biggest factor in a gamblers psyche in my opinion . never try to break the casino - take what they give you and run and if it is a bad day say good night especially since casinos are open 7 days a week and 24 hours . The casino says we will always leave the lights on for you and a venue to gamble .Be happy with your wins and always make sure you do not exceed your limits of what you can comfortably lose and be happy .I go up to salamanca with 10 k in my pocket and that is my limit for any one day as we go up once a week . I play high limit slots and $25.00 min - 1K max tables. It is enjoyable and it is an avocation - not a job or a team effort as none of us count cards just play BS and that is it and the rushes when the dealer has a propensity to break alot in a given shoe .since we are all retired businessmen with healthy bank accounts we never played scared money or short money for that matter . We enjoy our time and the food and the people we meet as well !!!!! Salamanca by the way has the best deals on Marlboro - $25.50 a carton and winstons $28.00 a carton as well as cigars like cohibas if you are a sigar smoker . Personal note to Ken - I have told at least 100 people about your forum and have even printed out your web addy on cards and handed it out to idiots who have no clue to the game . Hope you get lots of visitors from my efforts and your efforts to educate the people as well . Ken rockssssssssssssssss!!!
